does anyone have one? what are your thoughts on them? It seems like a pretty decent deal at ~$300 nib. I like the extra 1" of barrel since it will only add to accracy and velocity.

sir, i love my 605 3 inch, bought it last year, have over 500 rounds shot with no problems - great fit, function, and finish, accurate, ymmv, replaced my ruger as daily carry.
comes with 2 grips , i prefer the smooth one, until i find a nice wooden set.

On paper it seems like...dare I say it...a blue steel, inexpensive ruger sp101. Yes I know I'm talking about a taurus...but for ~$300 NIB it may stack up pretty well!

Years ago I bought a taurus 85 3" for my wife to carry. She loved it and I must admit I really like the thing too, we've fired thousands of .38 specials through it and it's as accurate as the day we got it. My 605 and 651 are both 2" versions, but I'd give a big thumbs up for a 3" version based upon my experience with teh model 85.

I think I answered this on The Firing Line earlier today. My 605 2" will shoot overlapping holes at 7 yrds and hold on center body mass out to 25 yrds. I don't see any reason a 3" wouldn't do the same if you can shoot that well.

I bought my 2" 605 about 6 years ago and absolutely love it. I have read lots of bad/disturbing things about Taurus here, but have not experienced any of them. I was not aware that they are putting out a 605 with a 3" barrel. I think the 2" needs a big brother.:D:D

sorry to be johnny come lately but this sounds neat! But, I cannot find a 3" 605 on the Taurus website. I don't doubt that they exist since I'm sitting here reading about one, but how long have they been out and about? And where might I find one?

Taurus still manufactures them:

I bought mine a couple of years ago for ~$250. Great little revo' for a lot of different things. Very accurate at combat ranges.

I've had a Taurus 3" M85 for about three years now.........sweet little revolver. The fit and finish are impressive.....the mechanics 100% reliable.

Yeah, but they don't stack up well. Not even close. The SP101 is a good, solid choice. The 605 is a cheap, poorly made POS. The 85s are cheaper and also very poor quality. The Rossi line is ...yep, you guessed it cheap and poorly made. How much is your life worth? Spend the extra money and get a quality gun like a Ruger or S&W in all steel.

Just helped a friend trade in a Taurus made POS .357. He loaded the gun and got click click click when he went to test fire it. The rounds were good. It was so out of time, it would not even fire-brand new. Needless to say, I helped him out, and he now has a nice new Ruger that is flawless.

Anybody that says that Taurii are as good as, or better than Rugers or S&W is either lying, or inexperienced. I heard some salesman trying to pound that BS up some poor ignorant customers butt. I called him on it right then and there. What a lying sleasy salesperson.

I believe the question was directed to those who have experience with Taurus 3" revolvers. I answered because the Model 605 has been for me, as has been the model 85, an excellent concealed carry gun. I have had no problems to speak of. I don't know of any brand that doesn't have problems. I don't believe the OP was looking to get dumped on by anybody who feels like their brand of gun is better than anyone else's.

My experience with the 2" rate very high (as been posted before). Its digested many many full house loads and has never had issues. I'm more accurate with it than any others thats why its aways with in reach. On the other hand if its lost or whatever, well its no BIG loss (Smith).

I believe the question was directed to those who have experience with Taurus 3" revolvers I have lots of experience with them. How else would I know what they are and are not. If people only want to hear what they want to hear only, why ask a question? I don't believe that disingenuous positive regard for something so clearly and consitently inferior in quality and performance to the other guns mentioned is in anybody's best interest (unless you are an unscrupulous salesperson or shareholder) and even then, a better product should improve customer relations and reduce warranty and litigation costs. When they make a good product, I will gladly admit it. And, yes, even Smith and Ruger have ocassional problems (i.e., S&W Sc/Ti lock fiasco) but the quality of the American products is, overall, very good and much better than what is imported from Brazil. I will not lie when someone asks a question like this.

Grandpa Shooter is correct...the post was directed to people who have specific expereince with the taurus model 605 3". Thanks for all of your input!

Also just a quick update...I did not end up getting the 605 3". I went to a local gunshow just before I ordered and a SS 2.75" Ruger Security Six followed me home.

wnycollector,

Ruger security Six AWESOME find and you did the right thing no way I would have passed it up either. I have a Security six and service six and love them both talk about durable and accurate. I have been on the hunt for a long time for a SS speed six.

I had a 605 3" back in the '90s, before they stopped making them the first time, when I was still also a dealer. I still have a 431 .44 Special that is a dream to shoot and quite accurate, and just fits me right. I am glad Shooter did not "call me out on it" back then in front of a customer, because I was in a lot better shape with a lot worse attitude. I have never lied to make a buck in my life. If I had, I would probably be a lot richer. I told a lot of people I thought a Taurus was a better value, and I stand by that for that time frame. I freely admit I am not nearly as well versed on what is what these days.
Mine was great. Nary a problem in the world. Installed Wolff springs and did a little internal polishing and that was one smooth little gun. I sold it (and had to give up my FFL) when my primary job moved me to Canada. There were a few seasons in hell.
OPINION: A Taurus is not a Smith, or a Ruger, but their quality used to be VERY close. As their business has grown tremendously, their quality has suffered some, but I have never heard of them not honoring a warranty claim or fixing a problem. Apparently in their business model, the course they are taking is "right for them". But, one must also recognize the significant differences in price (used to be a HUGE difference) between them and a Smith or a Ruger. For that much money Smith particularly ought to be able to have zero problems out the door (which they do NOT). I will not quibble that a Ruger SP is a far better piece to go to the range and blast away with magnums with than a Taurus 605, but with about the same very light range usage with anything but mild 38 Specials, my ex-wife's little Smith had to go home for a fix whereas my little Taurus never did.

Yep there was no way I was going to pass up a SS Six for less than $270! I have put 200 rounds through it over the last 2 weeks!!! I just put on a hogue grip and plan on trying it out tomorrow.

Yup.....my experience exactly . I've owned six Taurus and three Rossi over the years and EVERY one has been trouble-free.....and well made. I regret having sold off a Rossi M971 I had purchased back in the mid-1980's....it had one of the best trigger pulls on a revolver I ever experienced. I'd like to replace it some day......in the mean time I make due with my S&W M19-3 ;).
