Ok I have contacted the airline with which I am gonna be traveling and I know what I need to buy a hard sided lockable case and I also know that I need to let the airline know what is in my checked luggage but what can I expect with TSA that concerns me a bit. Does anybody have any ideas as to what happens there?

You'll be treated just like any other firearm owner. When you check your baggage, request a firearm card for the case. You may be asked to show that the gun is unloaded...if possible, I'd suggest just having the cylinder out of the frame. Put the card in the case, lock the case, drag over to TSA. Identify it to them as a firearm case. They may ask you to unlock it for inspection. Do so. Make sure the case is locked before it goes out of your control, as there are serious penalties for shipping a firearm in an unlocked case.

It's really not a big problem, I've done it several times without incident.
