FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A bill that would allow people to bring guns onto college campuses -- and use them if they were threatened -- may die in a legislative committee amid growing concerns by educators and others.

"This is a really bad idea," said Centre College President John Roush, whose private college in Danville bans firearms. "It would run counter to our tradition and the principles on which we operate our community."

How to change the public's opinion of CCW on campus?

Rep. Darryl Owens, a Louisville Democrat who is vice-chairman of the committee, sides with Stein.

"I just can't comprehend the need to have a gun on a college campus," he said.

John Drees, a University of Louisville spokesman said officials there also oppose the bill.

"Safety is our primary concern," he said. "We have always had a standing policy against having firearms on campus. We are comfortable with that policy."

Feeling safe is not the same as being safe....

He probably thinks there is no need to have a gun anywhere, as if need where the only issue here.

What about the rapes and attacks that happen every other week on campus? Maybe if some of the victims got together and sued because they weren't allowed to protect themselves, the fear of losing money would change their minds. No, they would just jack up tuition even more to get it back. Theives and muggers know that campus is a "gun free" zone, and they take full advantage of it.

yes why would anyone need a gun at all? they're only good for killing people, so if you carry you must be out to kill someone. college and guns don't mix at all...:banghead:

Instead of a Gun Free Zone. Why don't they just make campus's Crime Free Zones and allow CCW?

This way it would be impossible for anyone to kill someone with a gun, and it would also prevent rapes, robbery's, and all other types of crime! It would also allow people to defend themselves in the off chance they were attacked by a disturbed individual that cant read and and therefore did not know they were commiting a crime in a "Crime Free Zone".

That is such a good idea... They need to make "Crime Zones" for all the criminals to gather (like the place Home Depot built for day labors in their parking lot) and wait for people to walk into these zones. Crime would only be allowed in these pre-approved areas. If you dont want to be a victim, simply say out of the "Crime Zones".

Sounds like nothing more than a truthful admission of unfitness.

"I just can't comprehend the need to have a gun on a college campus,"

And that's why you should be voted out of office.

I would give it good odds on passing if it made it out of commitee. Ky has a great track record of protecting carry rights. Most of the state political in the papers in my part of the state are about the gov complaining about projected budget short falls which would conviently be fixed by casinos.
