I am looking at purchasing my first handgun. I found my local dealer to offer an HK USP .40 with night sights for $702.00 used but never fired. I am wondering if this is a good price, or what price could I offer that he would consider without me sounding like I had no idea what the gun is worth?

Check Gunbroker and gunsamerica and see what they are selling for than offer $50 off or so. At least that is a spot to start from. I really want one of the HKP30's, what a great looking gun!!

Also depends where you live. In Southern California, we pay pretty much MSRP on everything and to get a gun shipped in from another state has an associated fee of $80-150.

I recently bought a Beretta 92FS which ended up costing me like $660 after taxes and fees (599.99 retail). I couldn't buy the police specials ($450 or so) as the magazines are illegal in CA, so I'd have to buy mags to replace them AND pay $100 in fees and $45 in taxes. So that would have come to something like $675. I found a few for sale at $505, but after the transfers it would have been $605, then taxes, etc.

You might have a good deal on the HK. It really depends on the condition of the gun. I would give him an offer of $600.

First handgun a .40? Ok, start smalla dn progress. Seriously! Learn the basics and the fundementals of shooting a handgun then progress. It's much easier to learn with a easy shooting .22lr chambered handgun than it is to jump in with a heavier recoiling/louder reporting handgun and get into bad shooting habits. Yeah, yeah, it's not "tactial" blasting away with the little .22 but it's less "tactial" to have terrible shooting habits, poor technique and poor accuracy because of these things.
Not wanting to discourange the purchase of the HK. I own the same gun and a 6 or 8 other Hk's. The USP40 can be a snappy little bugger. They're fabulous pistols. Just reccommending you start small so that when you are more adept at handgun shooting, the larger calibers will be more enjoyable as you'll lkely have better techniques and shooting skills.

Looking at the flyer from CDNN and their cost for a similar pistol; that's a nice price.
Personally, I don't like to pay that much for any gun, but I'm just a cheap naturally....:)

i second the look at gunbroker and guns america to see what they are currently going for, and that will give you a good indication.
