A buddy of mine who works swat for my agency was telling me today of a rifle thats been passed around and may be selected for a 20 gun purchase.

It's the HK417D. He said the model they have is the select fire 12 inch in 308 win. Says about 40,000 or so rounds have been shot through with no major problems. says the gun holds MOA at 600 yards.

6 inch groups out of a 12 inch barrel semi auto at 600 yards sounds pretty impressive to me and the select fire capability would make it pretty handy to have in the event of an active shooter.

If purchased, it would take place of the tango 51 that they have depolyed now.

here is a link to the gun itself

Just though this would be some interesting info on a fairly new weapon. He said our department is the only one in the country right now with the 12 inch version I believe. he said they also make a 16 and 20 inch version, which i only assume would increase accuracy. Plus help controllability if full auto was ever needed.

Minute of angle at 600 yards with a 12" barrel from a semi auto? yeah right.

I'm just reporting what was told to me.

You don't think with the right technology this can be done jerkface?

Not with production grade H&K AR-10s with foot long barrels.

Not necessarily completely impossible, but rather unlikely for sure.

One MOA at 600 would be an improvement over what they got out of the PSG-1 . . .

HK's advertising on the 417 claims 1.3 MOA from 100-500 meters with a 12" barreled carbine and a 10x scope, for whatever that's worth.

I will have to get more info, but This is a demo model, which might be something that is a little bit more advanced and above what is out in the public right now.

I think the only HK 417s out there at all right now are demo models, unless the cool kids in JSOC already have them.

It's possible but not something you'd expect from a production gun. Probably just HK lying to sell some guns. As pointed out by another poster the stated accuracy would make it better than a PSG1. While I'm sure it's a cool gun it's probably the most over priced .308 AR on the market.

I'd love to know how they make a .308 at 12" controllable in FA.

A full length, full weight FAL in FA is almost impossible to use with any accuracy after the first 2 rounds and MOA at 600 out of a 12" barrel I find a leeeeeeeetle optimistic.

One of the posters here (was it you horsesoldier?) mentioned some first hand experience with a batch of 416s, and said they were not particularly accurate. Curious that the word is that the 417 is accurate.
