Look at what I got for FREE!!!:neener:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/monkeykevin/Firearms/Free.jpg

I just got these from my mom friend who USED to reload back in the day; and now he handed it down to me since I'm always talking about reloading :D

What am I missing to this RCBS Rock chucker?

On the Picture what is #1, is that where you put in primer tubs? and then #2 retract back into #1 where it picks up a primer? and then for #3 is that how its suppose to sit?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/monkeykevin/Firearms/RCBS1.jpg

I'm planning on reloading .40S&W for now .223 and .308 later on.

From looking at this picture what parts do I need from RCBS to restore it?

I don't know which DIES to get, any opinions?

I got the machine to run it, but I don't have the tools to run it. HELP HELP what do I need?:scrutiny:

looks like you need a spent primer catch tray, if you call RCBS they will send you one free, (to org owner, wink, wink) 1800 533 5000 . looks like a lucky find if you ask me .

What are you missing? Primer tube, looks like, but you can do without that.

What dies to get? Pretty much anybodies, except Dillon Square Deal B dies or dies for the Lyman 310 tong tool, both of which are proprietary.

You want to "restore it"? Doesn't look like it needs it to me.

looks like you need a spent primer catch tray,

Look at the first picture. He's got that.

Get a primer catcher tray.
(Oh wait! Thats what that cast aluminum thing is in the first picture!)

Get a new style Ball-End press handle.
(Much easier on the hand / wrist, and faster to operate)

The whole press-priming tube-feed thing is not worth fooling around with.

Take off the aluminum primer tube holder, and the priming arm, and put them in the junque box.

Get an RCBS hand priming tool, and don't even wonder "what could have been" with the press priming set-up!

Get an RCBS hand priming tool, and don't even wonder "what could have been" with the press priming set-up!Can I get an Amen?!

Your best plan of action is to remove the pins holding the #1/#2/#3 assembly out and throwing the thing away. I played with it for a few days when I got my RC (many years ago) and never got it to seat a primer consistently. The RCBS hand primer tool is the way to go (or another manufacturers priming tool).

Who made those scales?Hard to read, but it looks like the Ohaus oval trademark. Ohaus actually made almost all the beam scales for the various resellers like Lyman, RCBS, etc.

What am I missing

I see napkins and salt & pepper grinders - that's good. Do you have a bottle of good pepper sauce handy like Tabasco? That setup should be just fine.

Lyman / Ohaus scales & box!

And probably quite excellent scales too, after you clean all the cobwebs and dust out of the innards! :D

Top of the line, and very expensive reloading scales ($22.50) in 1970!

Who made those scales? i can read the M5 but not the name
Lyman OHAUS "M5" Precision Loading Scale with Magnetic Damping Action! Comp. Value $19.97 (Thats CHEAP!)

This thing looks OLD, Older than me... The color and style looks like 70ish/80ish its bitchin...

The RCBS hand primer tool is the way to go (or another manufacturers priming tool).

Which RCBS hand priming tool? Universal or non Universal? or Honady Priming tool, which is better?

Which dies set should I get? Honady or RCBS?

Since you lucked out on the press (which by the way is badly in need of cleaning and lubing) go spend the money on some good carbide dies. Get some with radiused mouths for easier loading and for rifle cartridges get the Lee Factory crimp die. If you are loading for plinking just use a trickler for the loads. Pick up some dippers and trickle the little bit left over.

Personally I would go to the Midway USA website and order off there. There probably somewhere to get cheaper stuff, but I really like the way Midway does business.

Which RCBS hand priming tool?Your choice of course. I have the non-universal, mainly because they didn't make the universal when I bought mine. However, IMO, the non-univ. is all that is necessary. You will have to have the proper shellholder anyway in order to use the press. Although the extra $14 isn't a bad price to pay if you plan on reloading a variety of calibers.

I have no opinion on the Hornady tool as I've never used one.

As for dies, again, your choice. I use both brands (and a few others). Both are high quality and will do the job satisfactorily.

I scabbed out when I picked my press up on ebay 4-5 years ago. It was all in a box and the seller labeled it as shotgun reloading stuff? It had a RCII, uniflow powder measure, powder baffle, powder trickler, 505 scales, RCBS case trimmer, lube pad, loading blocks, several hand tools, and a set of RCBS .270 dies and RCBS 22-250 dies. Got it for $78 shipped.

Who ever it was never listed RCBS in the title or description so it never showed up when you searched for RCBS, took a poor picture of all the stuff in the box. I only recognized the press and wanted one, couldn't believe my eyes when I found all the other stuff in there.

I also have the non uni hand primer same thing thats what was made but I would get the uni if I didn't already have this one. Just like the idea off being able to not have to have the shell holder out just to do a few rounds.

I think RCBS has a deal where they will refirb a unit. Give them a call - they are really good people.

I'm at a loss for words that I can type in this forum. :banghead: Does your mom's friend have any other toys he wants to give away?

You have two of the best things to get you started there. I have one of each. -Old as the hills, stronger and more precise than most people ever need.

I'm with the rest here. Don't worry about priming on press. There's no feel to it. Get yourself a Lee or RCBS hand primer. I'll suggest RCBS dies and the RCBS Uniflow Powder Measure on it's own stand.

You'll be in bidness before we know it. :D

I see you're here in Washington. If you've never reloaded, it's nice to get with a buddy who does, just to go through the steps first.

I purchased a Lee hand priming tool when my RCBS 25 year old bench mounted priming tool hiccuped. I was concerned about a primer bang so I purchased one from RCBS. They worked O.K. I sent the old bench mounted tool to RCBS and they sent a brand new one. I highly recommend RCBS. I can feel the primer seat with the RCBS bench mounted tool.

Get yourself a manual for your "new" press from RCBS. It should answer most all your questions. Also, get some of the books from the list on the sticky for new reloaders at the top of the forum. That should answer a good bit more of your questions. Once you've done that, you'll be ready to ask more serious questions and get down to business.

BTW, don't try to reload without following this advice, you'll run a good risk of getting yourself hurt real bad. Reloading can be dangerous, as you're making explosives that go off in your hand or right next to your face. So be safe while you're about this stuff.

Regards,

Dave
