I tried them with a 30-06 and 46g of IMR4895 - disaster. Were not as bad in my 30-30 but still way too hot. Shotgun patterns if they hit paper at all at 100 yds. Found an old cast lead book from the 1970s that had a 150g lead bullet load for 30-06 using 14g of red dot. Should do about 1750-1800fps. Tried it last weekend. Shot MOA with ten at 100 yds. All were touching. Gun was a 1950s FM Mauser with a Leupold 3x9. I'm loading up twenty more, increasing powder up to 15g and see how they do. I used styrofoam as a filler to keep the powder at the primer end.

Doesn't the styrofoam melt and make a mess inside the casings and your barrel?

Styrofoam works great. Been using it with .38,.357,.44,.44 mag for years. Don't pack it, just use it to fill up space and keep powder at bottom. Gases dissolve it. No residue, nothing left.

16-18 grains of 2400 and you won't need the foam! :)

I'd be curious how they shoot compared to your other experiments.

With red dot, you shouldn't need any filler, as per Ed Harris' "the load". I use anywhere from 7-13.5 grains of red dot in 7.62x54R, which has similar case capacity. Try it without filler, same charge, and see what happens.

Thanks, will try it next load. Do you use any specific type of primers? I'm using federal large rifle. Too soft for semis but good for the Mauser and 30-30

I've always used fiberfill (from fabric stores) in my target 38 loads. Never heard of styrofoam -- guess I'm never too old to learn!
