What are the best tactical shooter games

for PCs? For those not in the know, I am not talking about traditional first person shooters like Doom and Unreal. What are the best of the breed in the genre that contains titles like the Rainbow 6 series, SOCOM and the like?

I'm kinda hooked on Americas Army Ops. Its a squad based game utilizing standard issue weapons like M4, SAW, M203.

I'll second Ghost Recon and throw a bone out for Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell is much more stealth based and requires you NOT shoot most of the time. It's hard, but it's a blast.

I'll take the dark side on this one. I like Battlefield 1942 with all the fixins'. Road to rome and Desert Combat.

Americas Army is probabily more realistic, as in you don't respawn after you die, but it can be a bore if you die early or are just learning and keep getting it.

Check out these sites Boats.

I've been playing through the NovaLogic Delta Force games. They're pretty fun. I love the way the voxel engine models terrain. Yeah its not that pretty, but you can actually look for meaningful cover unlike some polygonal games.

the very best is Operation Flashpoint, including its various add-ons and sequels.

The Tom Clancy games are pretty good, although their outdoor environments and AI are somewhat mediocre.

Delta Force sucks. Don't even bother with it or its relatives.

I haven't played Battlefield 1942. By all accounts it is a more ambitious version of Medal of Honor, which is pretty high praise, as MoH is a great game (but not particularly realistic, alas)

I found Splinter Cell to be addicting. Trying to solve problems without making noise or being seen can teach you a lot. Ghost Recon is pretty good, but I felt that Medal of Honor was too easy and that your character could take too many hits. I'm not a fan of "health packs" anyway. MoH had an early-90's Wolfenstein feel to it, for some reason.

I agree with the Delta Force games but the most recent one, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, is really amazing. Wow! The shooting and the weapons are great. It's really a step up from the previous Delta Force games. Amazingly realistic IMHO.

America's Army, Raven Shield, Ghost Recon, Delta Force, Battlefield 1942, Metal of Honor, (soon) full spectrum Warrior, (SciFi) Planetside.

America's Army being the most realistic 'Battle' game (mulitplayer only), Raven Shield being the most realistic 'Tactical/SWAT' game.

Best thing about Americas Army is its free! Developed by DoD. I play it just about every day. :p

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a good game that is also FREE! Based on the Return to Castle Wolfenstein, it is online play only, WWII based, just came out a few months ago. It is a good way for someone to get into online play without shelling out any cash to see what it is like.

I am not a big fan of America's Army since I don't believe it should have been released to the public. It is not proper to make a game with tax dollars to compete in the marketplace. Plus IMO it takes too long to reload the M16 :D

I like to hang out in SE Weapons cache, but Pipeline is good too.

i havent resumed playing Delta Force: BHD, theres a couple missions that have replay value (with sniper rifle), but the AI is horribly stupid and very inconsistant. if you dont see whos shooting at you, you die quick. if you do see them, you can dance through their shots and survive.

i'm addicted to MOHAA. i just joined the {DieS} group, we play omaha beach exclusively, with an occasional theme weekend. rifles only, cant drop your weapon and pick up the enemys, cant cheat, only get 8 rounds of pistol ammo and 1 grenade. friendly fire is off.
it isnt the perfect FPS, the m1 garand is inaccurate and has no lethality. can rarely get a one shot stop, but the mauser gets one shot kills all the time.
anyone wants to drop by, look for 'alous' in the server name descriptions.

Quake 3 has a mod called urban terror www.urbanterror.net

Cool selection of weapons, maps and the body placement hits create more realistic wounding, broken legs, instant kill headshots etc...

I have also played the delta force games and found them entertaining.

Desert combat for BF1942 is still my current favorite.

Unreal tournament 2003 shows quite a bit of promise espescially when the current day mods become available

I only have the demo so I had not played enough to notice that. Isn't that kind of how it is in real life though? If someone has an unimpeded shot on you and you don't see them they can easily pick you off. Much harder if you see them and start ducking and dodging. Maybe I'm just not understanding the extent to which this occurs in the game. Again I've only played the short demo level.

NO ONE LIVES FOREVER II

Probably the most FUN shooter you will ever play. A little silly at times, since it pokes fun at James Bond... but it's a great shooter.

RETURN TO WOLFENSTEIN

WWII setting... challenging... and a lot of fun. I'm loving the spooky crypt levels. Scary.

CLIVE BARKER'S UNDYING

Scary game, good shooter, and good story. One of the most enjoyable shooters I've ever played next to NOLF2. Play this one at night and in the dark... with headphones or good stereo speakers turned up. One level was just about cleared... but the music was so spooky I got so creeped out I had to stop for the night. I want Clive to make another one like this. I'd pay full retail for it. http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/undying.htm

ALIENS VS PREDATOR II - SINGLE PLAYER MARINE MISSIONS

Another scary game. It's worth the full retail price just for these marine missions. The atmosphere is intense, heavy, dark, brooding, creepy, and flat out scary as hell. I love this game. Your mission starts out getting to a "shake and bake" colony on LV1201, a planet not unlike LV426. This is a lot like the same thing that went down on LV426 in the movie “Aliens” except you arrive a lot earlier… some of the fighting is still going on just as your getting to it. You end up separated and alone in a dark and damp complex. Alone in the dark. Your motion tracker picks up bits of movement all around you… you can hear screams… you can see dripping blood… you catch glimpses of screaming bodies getting pulled into vents… you get scared. You get spooked. And you haven’t even seen an alien yet.
You catch a glimpse of some sort of alien, a “Predator” that throws a body at you… you see explosions and hear an alien roar. Your heart is racing and your looking all over the place just scared as hell. When you finally see an Alien, it is up close and personal… they are fast. Your getting attacked before you realize there is a threat. The M41A Pulse Rifle is your best friend… but remember… Short Controlled Bursts.
This seems simple enough… at first.
Then they come out. When they come out… all your doing is scrambling backwards firing full auto and spraying everything. Get them off me! Even if you kill the creature – it’s blood scalds you badly… you feel the pain… you want to scream but the scream is held in check by the fear.
Your mom was wrong… There IS such things as monsters.
These monsters are bad... unclean and unfriendly. But they are very happy to see you. If you defeat an Alien in your encounter, you live long enough to bump into the next one... until they win. If your lucky, they will only kill you. If you are unfortunate enough to survive an encounter with them they will violate you in such a horrible way as to make prison gang rape look inviting... they impregnate you with a little monster that gestates and grows inside you and then eats its way out... You will die. Painfully. Giving birth to yet another of the creatures that killed you and all your friends. Nice huh?
And those are the stupid ones.
http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/aliens_vs_predators_ii.htm

If you can't tell...
I'm loving the scary FPS games. The scarier the better. The more emersive the better.
Do you guys know of any other scary FPS games for the PC? Don't give me that Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil crap. First Person... not 3rd. DOOM 3 is supposed to be scary.
I'd like a FPS Roll Playing game... Kinda like Morrowind but with guns and graphics that don't cause your computer to smoke and overheat with huge empty open spaces and no idea which way to go... Like make NWN a scary as hell FPS... that is what I want.

My current favorites are:

- R6: Raven Shield - Great modern indoors/close range game. People complain about the AI but really this game is all about multiplayer... Weapons and stuff feel real great. No bunny hopping lamers or similar crap like in CS or something... Very tactical feel at least if you're playing with a good group of guys online. This is the game to get for indoors "tactical" FPS gaming

- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and the expansion MOH: Spearhead - Great WWII game. Fun singleplayer, but multiplayer is it's heart as well. If you play on servers with a realism mod to up weapon damage and loadouts to more realistic settings etc it is a great game. The non-realism mod stock game annoyed me though... (plenty of realism servers online, I play on nothing else) Personally I prefer this over BF1942 due to superior multiplayer IMO (smaller scale, no vehicles but all I'm after in these games is infantry combat anyway... BF1942s largely arcade feeling and poor netcode last time I ventured a go at it pissed me off. Everyone's too busy d*cking around crashing the crappy vehicles and such... Weapons didn't feel powerful enough, etc {may have been addressed in patches, not sure})

- Infiltration - Free realistic tactical shooter mod for the Unreal Tourney engine. Lots of fun, mainly made for online gaming, newest version is supposed to be coming out any time now: http://infiltration.sentrystudios.net/ Has no crosshair and a type of iron sight aiming/shouldering your weapon implemented (FOV is too far away from the sites due to UT engine constraints, but hey...) Your hands have some free movement on screen before your view/head moves unlike regular FPSs. Takes a little getting used to but I really like it.

- Operation Flashpoint - This is the game to get if large scale outdoors combat is what you're after. It's mainly a single-player game as the online setup is frankly subpar IMO. You have to use gamespy, can't join games in progress, lag is often a problem, etc. But the vehicles that require multiple people to operate and the large maps add alot if you have the patience. The few times I've been in a good server with a group of good players it was some serious fun. The game is a little less polished than some, and is a little clumbsy at times, but it is offset by the huge battlefields/environments. OpFlash Has several expansions (in the original you are US troops in a conflict, in Red Hammer you are on the Russian side, etc), I especially enjoyed Resistance, which pits you as a major part of a rebel uprising against Commie forces in a island nation. Goes from you with your shotgun to commandering Commie arms and equipment (including tanks and such), performing ambushes on convoys/patrols, sabotaging their equipment, etc. I thought Resistance was one of the best singleplayer games I've played in a long long time (of course I really liked the theme/story of it to begin with...)

- America's Army - This one I'm kinda torn on. It's a good engine (UT2k3 based) and has good weapons models and maps, and of course it's a free download. But something about it turns me off to it. Seems like the weapon damage is pretty weak alot of times, that or the netcode is such that it's laggy without appearing so. I'll often dump into an enemy at fairly close range and we'll both sit there blazing off a mag at each other, each taking several hits. It takes more hits than I feel it should most of the time, kinda ruins it for me... That just doesn't feel "tactical", most of the time I'd rather play Raven Shield where I put a quick burst into a target and assuming I did my part aiming and controling movement so I don't miss they go down hardcore. Of course Raven Shield doesn't have the outdoors maps like AA does. I do love the iron sight aiming in AA though, I wish more games would go to that and do away with a cheesy crosshair and no-shouldering your weapon function. I keep hoping one of these updates they'll up the weapon damage values in AA, maybe they have since I last played... Someone let me know if they've addressed that or if I'm just crazy about that part to begin with...

I'll mention that DF: Blackhawk Down is alot better than the last couple Delta Force games IMO. The singleplayer still leaves something to be desired, and the multiplayer is hampered by the DF series patented crappy netcode/lag, but it is still fun (mainly for multiplayer, single gets boring fairly quick). Not quite as realistic as could be. There is still something to be said for the bigass boards, good landscape, and fun to use weapons. Nothing quite like getting on a (Mk 19?) automatic grenade launcher and smackin some suckers in a big Somalian town that looks/feels the part. I enjoy the miniguns on the blackhawks and Ma Dueces on the Humvees too (vehicles aren't driveable, but cruise on set paths in the multiplayer maps where you can man the guns)

Splinter Cell isn't a FPS, but it's fun as a stealth aimed game in 3rd person. All singleplayer, lots of fun little challenges. I personally wish you could be more free with the firearms at times.

vietcong wasnt too bad. i plaied it for a few weeks and other than never being able to see anyone....wasnt bad. weapon assortment was cool and super realistic.....you know if that was a m16a1 or a ak-47 that went off just to your right by the sound alone. but dang if i couldnt see anyone....typcial jungle so guess its realistic :D

did like MOH:AA alot, first game in a long time that totaly drew me in. I was playing ever day after work for a few hours. Yea not the most realistic one out there but it was just dang good fun.

Ive never been a huge fan of the tom clancy games just because they are difficult to control. i tried rainbow 6 when it came out, and couldnt figure out the 400 keyboard commands to control you squad in single mode. never could get the hang of it, even tho im dieing to try it again soon.

Wombat, thats the thing about team games such as CS and Planetside. You need to have a good team for it to be really fun, and unless your in a clan, its impossable to find a good team!

I've never played CS, but I would be willing to try (If somebody wanted to send me a CD ).

I would love to get with you guys and play a AA game sometime though. I have a medium speed PC, 1.6Ghz/512Mb ram/ 128k DSL. But have you ever tried hosting a server in AA? OH MY GOD! Its all text based! No graphic menus to set up your server settings etc.. You have to mash all your settings into a text file and run a separate exe :uhoh: .

I've done it before, but on a LAN. I don't even know if you could join me behind my firewall.

George - did you ever play System Shock II?

that game seriously creeped me out.

FPS/RPG set on a prototype spacecraft in the near future.

Neat guns and weapons, customizable characters, good survival/horror feel to it. Never enough ammo or utility equipment, complex plot, etc.

Although I haven't played AvP II, System Shock II is the only game I've played that actually scared me.

Deus Ex, by the same company, is another great FPS/RPG. Not really scary, but has an awesome story and some really neat locations.

Both should be pretty cheap if you can find them, and they hold up surprisingly well against newer games despite their inferior graphics.

SS2 was released under some odd auspices. Looking Glass Games (the developing company) went bankrupt shortly after the game was completed.

Warren Spector, the game's designer, managed to get it published anyway, and distributed by Electronic Arts (IIRC) but it was not marketed, nor was it widely carried.

I believe you can get a copy through EA's "Classic Games" division now.

Majoring in Computer Science, my college years included a lot of gaming. My personal favorites:

1. Rainbow 6 Series (Rainbow 6, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield, and add-ons). Rogue Spear was probably the best. The engine was smooth and little to no lag in 16-man multiplayer. I think Raven Shield is awesome, but I don't go to LAN parties anymore, so I haven't played this game in hardcore multiplayer, yet.

2. Medal of Honor. Based on the Quake engine. I like this game for single and multiplayer. Single player game is pretty linear as far as the story line goes, but it's still fun. Multi is awesome. Too many lamers though. Lots of players use automatics and can't aim. I stick to the Garand myself (or the shotgun when I want to get on people's nerves).

3. Operation Flashpoint. The engine had it's quirks, but it's strength was in it's customization. We used to make our own missions and play them with at least 4 people. You need some serious hardware for some of the missions we made; too many units.

Stuff I didn't like:

1. Counterstrike. This is arguably the most popular 1st person shooter, but personally, I can't get into it. For some reason, the Half-Life engine just makes me want to turn off the computer. It feels too cartoony for me.

2. Wolfenstein: Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Only one level was fun for multiplayer: the beach. The rest of them were really bad. The single player was cool, but then they threw in the supernatural element of Nazi zombies, and that just killed the game for me.

3. Ghost Recon. This is the one Tom Clancy shooter I didn't like. I was highly anticipating the game ever since I saw the first screenshots, but when we finally got a copy, the engine was too clunky. Movements seemed slow compared to Rogue Spear. Targeting and firing acquisition seemed to rough, too.

What I really want to try, but haven't had time to try out:

1. America's Army. This has gotten rave reviews and the Army even uses it for training. Eventually I'll install it and try it out.

I could host a dedicated 8-player Allied Assault or possibly Spearhead server if anyone is interested. May handle 10 players, not sure. I ran a 8 player server for awhile and it worked fine, I have however since then pirated some RAM from that computer so I'll have to see how that effects things. The server will have dedicated bandwidth but it's capped low enough on the upload to limit it to 10 players max, most likely 8 will be better... Not ideal at only 8-10 but it's better than nothing. Gotta get the computer set back up and see how it runs for hosting.

The Many sings to us...

That game scared the hell out of me. Instant classic.

Deus Ex wasn't a scary game, but it had an intriguing plot and many times you were doing things other than running around and shooting. My biggest beef with it were the weapons; they were WEAK. Took six solid hits from the little assault rifle to down a badguy. PLEASE.

Dorrin79
August 1, 2003, 10:06 AM
Nightcrawler -

yeah, I noticed the same thing. The assault rifle was probably the lamest firearm in the game (although I often kept one in my inventory so I could use the 20mm grenades). Most of the rest were capable of 1-shot kills, if you went for the head. You pretty much need Advanced skill in a weapon to get headshots at any distance above 10 ft, though.

Of course, once you have master skill in Rifles, all you really need is the sniper rifle.

Supposedly the game is beatable without killing anyone :scrutiny: . I've tried this but couldn't get through the later levels.

George -

Some of the weapon upgrades in Deus Ex could've been better researched. To begin with, the 10mm pistol started off with a 6 round magazine; you could use all the upgrades and get it up to 11 rounds, which is actually more realistic.

And a modification to control recoil? A bolt on modification to improve accuracy? Silencing a rifle so well that it only makes a tiny high-pitched "quip" sound?

I know why the game designers put these in, but I wish they've have let ME design the weapons instead. LOL. The shotgun was pretty cool, though.

The kicker about the lame-o assault rifle is that it was supposedly chambered for 7.62x51mm; I don't know too many guys that'll take more than one round of .308 through the sternum at point-blank range and require five more shots.

Oddly enough, the sniper rifle was chambered for .30-06. Cool, in a retro way.

I honestly can't wait for Deus Ex 2...

I have burnt a lot of time on BF1942 and the Desert Combat mod. They are coming out with a Vietnam mod early next year. Plus there are a ton of other mods like Star Wars and Warhammer 40K

yeah, the mag capacities were crap.

I gave them some leeway on the weapon upgrades, after all they had magic - er, I mean nanotechnology

The nano packages were neat, but I never really used most of them.

Regardless, I can't wait for DXII either. From the little snippets I've read it should be fantastic.

Hehe, and the assault rifle would only make little black marks on a door, but the 30.06 sniper rifle would blast it right off of its hinges!
