When selling a handgun to someone in another state, do I have to have a FFL dealer send it for me ?

According to Federal law, you do not need to have an FFL ship it, but it does have to ship TO an FFL.
However some states require all firearms to be shipped by an FFL only.
You need to check the laws on both your end and the other guy's end.

A FFL holder does not have to do the shipping for you.
Although, I find that privately owned UPS and FedEx sites, like Mailboxes Express, Kinkos, and .pkg's, at least in my area, will refuse to accept the package once they're informed that the content is a weapon. I haven't tried calling UPS directly and asking for a pick up at my home as yet....might be worth a try.
I've found recently that shipping through my FFL holder is actually cheaper. He charges a fee for his handling the shipping, but offers VERY reduced rates on the actual mailing fee. The last weapon I sold to someone in another state was shipped through my FFL holder, I probably saved 30$ using him.
