The first person who says "870" or "500" gets slapped ;)

In all seriousness, which of these two do you see as the most reliable HD shotgun?

I have 'owned-n-operated' a Maverick 88 since 1990. No problems. I don't count having to be completely stripped after getting 'dunked in the drink' during a duck hunt as a problem.

My 88 now wears the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore barrel. It is my HomeLand Security shotgun...Secures my Home and Land from vile threats of the evil do-ers.

Just as a side question, is the H&R pump one of the ChiCom imports?

All of them will do the job. So far I like my Remmy 870. Those H R 870 clones do look tempting too. They are well made after handling one at Academy.

870

/ducks.. runs away giggling madly

disclaimer.. I actually have no opinion here, I handled the 870 knock off once and it seemed ok. I've never touched a maverick.

I'd recommend the 870 and the mossberg 500.

ok fine.
I voted for the Maverick. Sure it's not as finely finished as a 500, but so what for HD? If they are going to be equal quality and equal price and both fit you appox the same...then you might as well buy American rather than Chinese.
(Note: this is NOT saying that the H&R is junk. It is also not saying the Maverick is better just because it is American. I'm just saying that where there is no preference, then why the hell NOT buy products made in the USA?)

Blue Brick is right.

I'm not sure that the 88 makes a lot of sense, given that its price is not far from a regular Mossberg anyway.

I have an 870 and an 1100, but I have learned to prefer the tang safety, as many people do. The Mossberg has that, the Maverick doesn't.

That doesn't mean I think they're "very poor." I'm sure they're fine. However, the 870 and 500 aren't expensive to start with, and they're the "industry standard" cop shotguns.

Is it?!?!?!??!?!?! hrm...didn't know that. in that case, i'd still buy the maverick but politics would not play into it.

Here is what the H&R Pardner Pump Protector has going for it.

Low cost.

A smooth action out of the box.

Quality Steel receiver

It has a machined extractor and ejector

It has an metal trigger guard

It is parkerized

It is very reliable and will feed cheap ammo that some shotguns won’t

7+1 capacity with a mag tube extension and 18.5" Barrel

Drilled and tapped for a scope mount

The barrel locking lug is in a better location. Being higher up it allows for a mount to be added above the fore end to mount accessories. Not so on the 870.

All Remington 870 accessories will fit it and there are plenty available. Some may need to be modified a little to fit.

They are excellent deal and step above the Maverick line for home defense.

I recently handled both and bought the maverick. The biggest reason was $$$, I got a better deal on the maverick. My father-in-law bought his GF a 20ga pardner for HD duty at her place. I think you cant go wrong with either.

Also the maverick is assembled in the US (texas) but "some" parts are imported from mexico.

I go with the NEF 870 clone. It will be my next purchase as $ permits. I handled one and it seems to be well made. I dont mind it has chicom leanings, if its cheap and has good reviews, then its a go.

I voted Maverick .I worked at a gun dealer in Maryland and we sold them they seemed to be well made .I have a Mossberg 500 which is almost the same gun.

Poor choices.

I would never trust a knock-off for defense. Get one for fun... but not defense.

Remington 870.

Own both of them, plus a few others, the Partner is a bit smoother and is my preference.

The Maverick is a fine HD gun, mine has never had a issue.
Its not a hunting shotgun ,but for bad guys that come in uninvited its perfect.

I would have said Maverick a few months ago. I shoot a Mossberg 500. The Maverick, however, has a crossbolt safety and someone said a while back on a thread that the NEF pump has a tang safety. DING DING....got my vote. :D

Pardner Protector has a safety just like the Rem 870. Which means it's not a tang safety.

Well, then, I'll change my vote to Mossberg 500, er, I mean, Maverick. Safety don't REALLY matter anyway on a home defense guns since it's going to be stored with the chamber empty. The Maverick's slide lock button is better located. In fact, the ergos on the Maverick in every sense beat up on the old 870 layout.

Eagle Pass is on the river/border. They are likely located there because of the ease of which they can import illegals. The pay scale down there is similar to Mexico, anyway. Since they're making the parts IN Mexico, it's a logical location for the plant. I do have this distrust of Chinese goods. I know they do make SOME decent stuff, but I've seen lots of junk from 'em, including some firearms. I do have a couple of Norinco SKSs that are rather nicely functional, though. I'm sure the NEF is a decent gun, just don't like 870 ergos at all and it's a clone.

Seriously, someone said in another thread the NEF had a tang safety. Dangit, whadda duffus....:D

I am sorry I just don't know why you would buy a Maverick over a Mossberg 500.

I would buy a Pardner pump over an Express anyday, I would buy a Mossberg/Maverick over an Express anyday.

My line up would be Pardner, then Maverick or Mossberg and a rusty old dempsey dumpster to toss the Express in because it's such a piece of junk for a shotgun.

No apologies. My Pardners have functioned GREAT and I never had a Mossberg EVER let me down.

The Maverick is a price point shotgun and has a few faults but none like what Remington has offered lately with the Express shotgun.

The Mossbergs are much loved here in Tidewater, Va. by dog hunters and turkey hunters and they bring home game rather well.

Pardners are slowly catching on as folks use them and yes, there is the same angst with the Pardners here as is on this forum, but I have seen die hards change their mind after using the guns on a dare.

I hope folks keep hating 'em as I plan to add more to my gun locker along with a few single barrel NEF/H&R'S as well.

Oh yeah, While I'm on my unapologetic streak, the Pardner in far from being a knockoff of the 870 and the Express is not even in the same league with the Pardner pump. The Chicom shotgun builder is Norinco and they ,years ago, took the Russian SKS rifle and made their own variants with the SKS45 and made a better gun. History has proven that and the Chinese builders did the same with the Pardner. Now H&R is part of Remington and it's ironic that they build the Express and are less quality than the less expensive Pardner.

The Century Arms Ultra 87 is made in China and loosely base on the 870, it has a tang safety. Maybe they are getting it mixed up with the NEF Protector.

I had one about 12 or 13 years ago. I also had a couple Mosbergs. My DSon wanted a shotgun for his house so I gave him that Maverick. He was happy.
He has used it, as is, a time or two for rabbit hunting.
It's okay if they're up pretty close. I think he still has that shotgun.
I've added a couple more Mossbergs.
