I bought a Korean era surplus bayonet for my Winchester M1 Carbine. Any one know a good place to sharpen it?

When sharpening a bayonet, is there a preferred method or anything?

If you plan to use your bayonet as a field knife, you could probably find a commercial knife sharpening service in your area - check the Yellow Pages, or Google "knife sharpening" + Jacksonville, NC. Lots of times, knife/cutlery stores will do sharpening for a nominal fee. Alternatively, you can buy a knife sharpening system for $20+/-; my favorite is the Lansky system, I've also used the Spyderco "Tri-Angle" system.

If, however, you're contemplating using the bayonet as a weapon while attached to your carbine, it may actually better to leave it "dull," as issued - although it seems counter-intuitive, a razor-sharp edge on a bayonet may be MORE likely to snag on your enemy's web gear or get stuck in his rib-cage than a dull-edged bayonet, which would tend to slide off of gear and bones. Also, a dull bayonet tends to tear tissue and wedge/split bones apart instead of making nice clean-edged cuts, therefore causing wounds that are either more painful/traumatic or more difficult to suture. Given that you'd be thrusting with the weight of a 6-lb carbine behind the point, as long as you're not half-hearted in your efforts you WILL penetrate your enemy's torso.

I can't imagine sharpening a US GI bayonet.

If it's a real GI bayonet in good condition, sharpening it will ruin any collector value it might have in the future.

Plus, a truly sharp edge will chip or roll over much easier in a real bayonet fight.

Buy a quality stone, a good book, and learn on your own.

Sharpening a blade is slowly becoming a lost art.

+1

but DON't sharpen your bayonet, for all the reasons above.
