Great Gun Shops!

I've got two great gun shops on the way home from work now!

The one is in my signature line, the other is Ammo Depot in Caddo Mills (about 25 miles east of Dallas on I-30).

I stopped in this evening and picked up a very nice Egyptian Mauser. The price marked on it was cheaper than anything I'd seen in the Shotgun News. After I filled out the paperwork and got my checkbook out, Mickey told me to take another 12% off the marked price and that was my out the door price.

Final result was that I got out the door for a total of 20% less than what I would have paid without the discounts. When I got home I went through the latest two issues of Shotgun News to make sure I hadn't forgotten. The closest I could find would have cost me over $60 more by the time I paid shipping and FFL transfer fee.

But, you say, for those kinds of prices, you must have to put up with a lot of BS, right?

Nope, Mickey's a real nice guy. That's why I've been buying guns from him for over 13 years...

If he had a website I'd add it to my signature line.

You are very lucky indead to have TWO good gunshops near you! I don't know of a gunshop that has both, good prices and nice service. I end up shopping around from store to store and only buy when a price seems good. There are a couple of gunshops that I won't ever go to again because the guy running it is a racist and an all around bad guy. I have been buying from one guy, selling to another and getting my FFL transfers from yet another. I wish I had one good shop that gave good service and had good prices.

Sounds like a deal until you realize that he has enough mark-up on his guns that he can knock off 20% and still make his nut off you.:neener:

Man, I have just been a stinker all day!:D

I hope so, I want him to stick around!

It works for both of us, I've looked around and still can't beat the deal he gave me.

A couple of months ago, I was looking for some 300grain Hornady .44 mag ammo.

I called 5 shops in the Garland/Dallas area and no one had any. One shop had some Hornady with lighter bullets. I figured what the heck and stopped by Ammo Depot. Sure enough, Mickey had 5 boxes, and at a lower price than the stuff (with the wrong bullet weight) at the other shop.

While I was in there buying my Mauser, a guy brought in a pistol he had bought there and said it wasn't working right. It was a Taurus, so Mickey could have just told him to send it back to take advantage of the lifetime guarantee, instead, he took it back, and told the guy that he would do whatever the guy wanted, give him his money back, give him store credit, whatever. The guy couldn't decide what he wanted, so he just left the gun with Mickey and said he'd come back later and let him know what he decided. Mickey told him that was fine.

It was pretty obvious that the guy was clueless--he admitted that the only ammo he had shot in it was Wolf, and he also admitted to fiddling with the magazine feed lips. Mickey never commented on either of those facts, and didn't even try to encourage him to take it back and try some different ammo. Even after the guy walked out, Mickey didn't make any snide remarks or roll his eyes. He's just a real nice guy. And, unlike a lot of gun store owners, he's pretty knowledgeable and doesn't beat you over the head with caliber preferences or any of the other typical BS you get from the other side of the counter in most gun stores.

If you find a gun you like in the shop, he'll take you out back, give you some ammo and earplugs and let you blast away at the dirtpile he set up for that purpose (shop is out in the country). He'll even let you do it if the gun is brand new.

I see a lot of posts about bad gun shops, and I've even made a few of them. I just thought it would be nice to post about a shop where I've had nothing but good experiences. (Even though this is a new shop, Mickey has another store also called Ammo Depot in Mesquite--that's where I first got to know him.)

I've been dropping by a place in Carrolton, TX called SPS (Silhouette Precision Sports); guy who owns it really knows his stuff; hunter pistol master shooter. Got a nice invertory, good prices, great shop dog and bird. Crew of characters always hanging around. Coke machine. Great sense of humor. Looks like I'll be buying a few things there shortly.

Regards,
Rabbit.
