I just picked up a 98%+ 20 ga, 870 Express magnum with 28" tube and remchoke. "just because" I liked it. Somewhere along my past, I picked up some 3" mag steel shot loads that have sat in my safe wating for an opertunity.. I don't plan on waterfoul hunting any time soon but IF I ever want to ever use up this ammo, is this gun/barrel/choke Ok for occasional use of steel?
Appologies in advance if this is a dumb question but it's been 10 years since I had a "hunting " shotgun. I'm a target shooter mostly.

It depends on which choke tube you have in it. The tubes are marked as to whether or not they are steel-shot safe.
Take the tube out and see what it says on it.

In general with most choke tubes:
Skeet, IC & Mod are O.K. for steel.
Full, Extra-Full, and Turkey are not.

Thanks for the fast reply! So it's only the tube i have to sweat? I have a modified in there but don't recall seeing any refference to steel so may need to replace it .

Well, they probably don't say "O. K. For Steel"

The ones you shouldn't use steel in probably say "Not for Steel".

Your Mod tube should be fine.
The Remington Express guns are all way newer then steel shot.

I have two Full RemChokes, one that is steel-rated, and one that is not.

They are marked as such. That said, except for turkey with an alloy like Hevi-Shot, I can't see what a steel-rated Full choke would be good for, since patterns with hard metals through a Full would be more like a Turkey choke.

If it's an express model in undamaged condition it shoud certainly be safe for steel, provided you are not using a choke that is unsafe for steel(These are generally marked as such, but usually anything less than a Full choke is safe)

Match the number on your choke with the listing on the page and you will get a accurate answer whether or not your choke tube is Steel rated. If not you can see which one you need to buy.
