View Full Version : Clear Flip Open Scope Lense Covers? Why?

Hello,

At the gunstore I bought a couple flip open lens covers for my .22's 'scope.

All they hand in the size I needed were ones with clear lenses.

Ok, I went ahead and got them. I figure that I can flip them open if I need more clarity or if they get dirty with snow or dirt.

I don't understand, though, if they were made to flip open, why do they even make clear ones?

I was very close to just coloring mine in with a black permanent marker, but decided against it.

What's the point of clear flip-up 'scope covers? I don't get it.

Thanks,

Josh <><

I have always thought the same thing. the only thing I can think of is the possibility that while hunting, you may not have a chance to flip them up and dont want to risk spooking your prey.

they sure do reduce optical performance though.

thats pretty much it, sometimes, if your snoozin, something crawls up on you and its to late to do anything but a quick shot. if you have to fiddle around flipping open covers, it might be gone. i would not try to shoot anything at anything much over 50 yards though, i don't know what those extra layers of plastic would do distorting the veiw as they do.

It's not that complicated-- it allows you to sight without opening them. Or to put it another way-- it provides lens protection for your expensive, high-end optic without totally disabling it.

Ever want to keep your high dollar glass protected from bad weather and still be able to make a shot? There you go... :)
