I am thinking about getting a Makarov from one of the mail order places.

Does anyone know where the best deals are?

What is involved in ordering a handgun through the mail?

It's a little bit involved. First, you need to seek out a FFL holder who is willing to transfer the gun through his shop (it may be more difficult than it sounds). There will be a fee involved in this, you may have to shop around to find the best deal on the transfer. Make sure he's going to ok with what type of gun you are transferring through. Next, contact seller (who should also be an FFL or working with one) and find out if they will allow you to pay for the gun and then send it to your FFL. He may refuse and say the payment must come from the FFL holder (in which case you pay your FFL and have him cut a check), either way, it will be necessary have your FFL send the seller an ink-signed copy of his FFL before he will ship the gun. Most FFLs will not send copies of their licenses to anyone except another licensed dealer, distributor, or manufacturer. When your FFL receives the package, you take care of the appropriate paperwork. Simple enough? :D

Here is what I did to mail order my last two gun purchases. What I would recommend is ordering from a large reputable company. I would recommend J&G Sales (http://catalog.jgsales.com/), or CDNN Investments (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/). I purchased two Steyr pistols from CDNN (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/). I was very pleased with the ease of ordering and the friendly customer service I received. The advantage with these two companies is that they are big enough that many firearms dealers have purchased guns from them before. This was what happened to me. I found a dealer that was willing to transfer a pistol to me for only $10!! This is not the norm. Many dealers will charge at least $40. If you are a good customer that the dealers knows you can negotiate a better price then your regular stranger off the street so don't be afraid to ask for a better price. I called CDNN and told them what I wanted, gave them my CC, then told them where I wanted to ship the gun to. They checked their computer and found that my dealer was on file. They charged me $9.99 for the shipping and that was it. I ordered on a Tuesday, and my gun came in on Thursday. I very impressed with how easy it was to order a gun through the mail. I have about 6 more guns that I am planning to order from CDNN. If you have a good internet connection try downloading their catalog, or you can go buy a Shotgun News at Barnes & Noble they always have a big ad in there. Good Luck

I thought that was probably the way it was done. I have ordered rifles like that, just no handguns. I have a local shop that is two blocks from me. The owner, a lady, was very helpful in getting my two Mosins here last year. I only had to pay 15.00 for both rifles because they were in the same box.

I will talk to her today.

Now, who has the best deals on a Makarov? Which one is the best to try to get?
