Can anyone recommend an ankle holster for the Smith 640. I used to carry a 36 in one but I'm concerned with the absence of the hammer with the 640. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Galco Ankle Glove - model # AG158(RH draw)/AG159(LH draw). No thumb-break, retention is via tension-screw adjustment. The support strap that goes around your upper calf is important, without it a heavier gun like an all-steel S&W 640 will start dragging the holster down, and the bottom edge will start rubbing/chafing your ankle-bone unless you wear high-topped sneakers or low-cut boots to protect your ankle. The synthetic fleece on the back helps comfort a lot.

I used to wear a S&W 642 in an Ankle Glove during long-pants season in S. AZ, and found it pretty comfortable with an Airweight gun - with my steel 640, it wasn't painful or uncomfortable, but the unbalanced sensation felt a lot like wearing a single combat boot on one foot(and, yes, I've worn combat boots, I DO know what they feel like to wear).

I no longer wear the Ankle Glove because I developed a sensitivity to the neoprene ankle band, where the un-covered edges allowed the latex-rubber(?) material to touch my bare skin and started causing rashes after extended wear; had I worn the unit over a sock or an Ace bandage, that would probably never have happened.

Default to Lou Alessi or maybe Ken Null but there's all the difference in the world between a civilian concealed carry in business casual and a New York reload for a uniformed officer or somebody in call-out dress.

As already noted above any carry is a rig including shoe and sock and pants as well as handgun and holster.

Check out the ankle holsters from Renegade. Don't think they have a website.

I think their phone number is (602) 253-8431 (from Google).

I have one that I purchased specifically for a Model 36 but have ended up carrying my 640-1 and SP101 2" in it more. Never had a problem with retention. I got used to the weight quickly.

I carried the above snubs daily for about a year at a job that required business dress.

Hope that helps.
