View Full Version : What's this blue-green junk seeping out of my barrel?

Yesterday, after my first shooting session with my new Ruger GP100 (KGP141!!), I let some Hoppes #9 sit in the barrel and this morning I found that some liquid oozing out. It is blue-green in appearance and has the consistency of cough syrup. It's kinda like that cheap Wal-Greens generic NyQuil, but I haven't tasted it.
It was coming from the muzzle end, as the revolver was propped on the kitchen counter, resting on the trigger lock with the muzzle hanging over the sink. I wiped it up this morning, and after work (now) it hasn't generated anymore of this anomaly.
I also let the same solvent sit in the barrel of my HK USP9C, but there's nothing dripping from it.
Any clues?
Thanks

That's solvent that you didn't get out, colored with copper that the Hoppes has removed from the bore.

Copper turns green when it is eaten by solvent. Prolly copper fouling?

Then it makes sense that there would be a considerable amount coming from the "lands-and-grooves" rifling of my Gp100, but none noticeable from my polygonaly rifled USPC. :)
Thanks!

The design of the rifling doesn't effect the fouling of the bore as much as the roughness of the rifling. Your USPC probably has a smoother bore than your Ruger.

Ectoplasm.
Whatever you do, don't cross the streams. It would be bad.

...total protonic reversal. Ok guys, important safety tip.:D

So, is that the equivalent of "getting slimed"?
Seriously, that happened to me yesterday; is it anything to worry about, or just a normal consequence of gun cleaning?

It's an indication that you need to clean occasionally with a serious copper solvent like Sweet's 7.62 or at least Hoppe's Benchrest. Maybe every third cleaning.:)

"What's this blue-green junk seeping out of my barrel?"
Well, at first I was going to mention going to the doctor for a shot of penicillin, but after reading the post, it's only copper.

Hoppes makes a formula designed for this. Its in the Black bottle. I used it on my old surplus rifles and it works wonders. I rememeber my first encounter with this green stuff (copper) then I read in a gun rag somewhere explaining what it was and how to remove it. Look for the Hoppes in the black bottle and follow the directions and you should be on your way to a copper free barrel.

Back on topic... would JB Bore Cleaning Compound take this stuff out as well? Or do you have to use something else?

It's a line from the movie GhostBusters. Egon told them, not to cross the streams of their proton packs.
I feel like such a dork now.

Justin, Flitz or GunBrite will work - so will JB or RemClean.

Tip:
If you don't clean , you won't have to worry about it.
Works for me, I've been blue-green and junk free for awhile now. :D

Nothing oozing from the barrel from a GP 100 should be of any concern. Swab it out and go on. Or leave it alone like "vampire repellant", and go forth confident in the knowledge you can vanquish both the mortal and undead.

So was Justin's post.
For your penance, go watch the movie again. ;)

I'm a little fuzzy on the whole good-bad thing. What do you mean 'bad?'Imagine every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light. (It gets fuzzy from there. Someone help me out.)

No, no; I believe what you've said is enough. I mean, after your molecules explode at the speed of light, what else matters?
Of course, that's more of a guideline than a rule. :D
