I want to start shooting BP in my 45-70 Sharps. Maybe this will start a war, but I'm looking for powder recommendations. The Goex is a lot cheaper, but I hear Swiss is the best. Is it worth trying the expensive stuff?

Each powder has its proponents. Since you are a beginner, why not save yourself some money and shoot the cheaper powder. Wait until your loading and shooting skills will allow you to tell the difference, if any, for real.
Many winning scores are shot every year with Goex, and so with Swiss.

Get the cartridge grade Goex. It works great in 45/70. Cartridge grade is a lot like 2F but there is a difference. It's the same price as 2F so might as well use what the guys that make it say it best for cartridges.
Myself I have the best luck with heavy bullets. Around 500 grain weight. I have tried to do paper patching myself but it's not easy to get it right. And its very time consuming also. So I started buying my bullets pre patched from this guy: http://bullshop.gunloads.com/index.html
He does great work and his prices are fair. Drop him an email and tell him what you want to do with your 45/70 and ask his advice on bullet selection. Then follow his advise and you will be pleased. Give him a try and if you tell him I sent you he will charge you more.:)

I'll agree with Misfire99 on the Cartridge grade Goex, but if you can't get it, go with the 2f Goex; you can try the Swiss later if you like shooting BP in the cartridges.
