Got a Kimber Super Match II I want to take down but need to know how to remove the safety. The right side looks like it can be tapped off of the pin, but I'd like to know for sure before tapping away at a $2K investment. Notice the slot at the bottom of the lever.
This my first 1911 with the ambidextrous safety. Every few thousands rounds I take all of my 1911's down for a thorough cleaning.
BTW - Man, I love this gun!!!

Got lucky and found the answer to ambi safety removal on the 1911.org Kimber forum. The left side safety lever is removed in the conventional manner. Once the left side safety is removed the right side is rotated approx. 180 degrees CCW to release it from the grove on the hammer pin and it lifts right out.
To reinstall insert the right side first and then rotate it back on the groove on the hammer pin in the full down position. Then insert the left side in the conventional manner. You may have to play with it a little but it goes right back together.
This gun is new but since I shoot cast bullets it gets dirty pretty fast. I shoot at least 600 rounds a week and have put about 4,000+ through it already. The bottom end needed the crude cleaned out.
Not having experience with ambidexterous safties, I didn't want to risk snapping the shaft. Amazing how simple things are when you have the key to how it's done.
Getting right down to it, I feel the ambi safety is more trouble than it's worth, but it looks cool.
A friend of mine claims my yorkies are better watch dogs than his boxers. He said that even when they jump up you can still shoot right over them! :D
