I've got an STI Trojan and I'm looking to add a magwell. Does anyone know of a true drop in magwell? I don't want to do any alterations to the frame. Would I need new grips as well? TIA

I had one, I won it at an IPSC match, I think it was made by Smith and Alexander. I have since taken it off, but it was a true drop in part. And you use standard grips. It really helps to have an extended mag or a standard mag with a baseplate (that isn't the word I am looking for, mag buffer ? whatever).

"Bumper", I think...?

Wilson makes a unit that hooks over the lower grip screw bushings. No frame modifications, but you have to take some material off the backside of the grips to make room for the hooks. It's not as wide as a lot of wells, so you don't need to get those square-cut-at-the-bottom grips. It "looks right" with the stock grips, but you get less target area for mag changes.

I like it cuz it's cheap, lengthens the grip just enough, and doesn't look "gamey".

Smith and Alexander does make what your looking for. They also sell grips and a few other things. I dont use the mag well, but I do use their "full checkered mahogany" grips on most of my 1911's. They are nice, full grips that are flush with the bottom of the frame(I assume to work with the mag wells), They dont have the bevel at the bottom or the cutout for the pin for the mainspring housing.

I just got the S&A magwell and slimline grips. The magwell is a one piece unit and did require fitting...not to the frame, but to the grip safety. It was very easy.....heres a pic of a custom Norinco 1911......

I got one from Dawson Precision for a Para that I like a lot. They do have them for all STIs - NO modifications necessary and you can just pop in on and off - I didn't have to change grips or anything and it works well. They make two: the Dawson Awesome and the Dawson Ice Magwell. You can see them on DawsonPrecision.com. I got the Dawson Awesome for one gun and am going for a Dawson Ice for another I like it so much.

The one I had replaced your whole mainspring housing. So, I was held in with that pin.

Thanks all for the help. Smith and Alexander seems to pop up a lot. I'll have to take a look at them again.
