I recently purchased a 12 ga side by side hammer gun with damascus barrels. I know these were made in Belgium and imported by Crescent Firearms with the name of the hardware store inscribed on the side. I bought it to shoot black powder in as I have an 1878 Colt that has been in my family for generations and I felt uncomfortable shooting it very much. I am looking for info on S H Harrington. Where were they, what years were they in operation and an approximate manufacture date of my gun. It has a 4 digit serial number. Thanks to all in advance.

I can't give any info. on this particular gun for you, but I will say that you better be very careful if shooting a damascus barreled gun. Inspect it very carefully. Test fire it from a distance by tying it to something and using a long string to pull the trigger. Use light BP only loads. I think damascus barreled guns are okay to shoot if they're in good shape (others may disagree with me, some say to never shoot them) but you need to be careful and keep a close eye on it for signs of problems.

As with all old shotguns, a trip to Mr Gunsmith is in order here. He should check....

General condition. This would include sears, triggers and lockup.

Barrel thickness.

Chamber length.

And the first time I fired this with very light loads it'd be tied to a tree and fired with a long string.
