Looking at the above budget document, it seems that the Army has requested 5,000 Future Handgun Systems for FY09 (and 5,000 each in FY10 and FY11).
Gee, when does the next selection process start? :D

Gee, when does the next selection process start? When we no longer have a dire need of something better than what we're currently using.

I looked through that report and all it said was "future handgun system" and made no mention for what that "system" would be..
any idea what they're going with?

I don't think even the Army knows yet, but they want 5,000 of them in the next Fiscal Year.

The military just purchased 25,000+ new M9s a few weeks ago.
The M9 is a great gun when the correct magazines are used.

I remember reading about the Future Warrior system had a machine pistol with a 30-round magazine, and a 4-shot explosive dart launcher. Not certain of the range, but the caliber seemed along the lines of a 5.7 or 6.5 mm.

Not going to change much as long as we are using 115 gr FMJ. I would shut up about the M9 if we were allowed to carry premium JHP ammo.

Cover for a densely black program that is classified at the "death before reading" level. And having posted that, I find my phone is now bugged.
The BuSpecOps (Budgetary Special Ops) people just know that anything that has "future" and "system" in the title gets funded. If it is being questioned then a renaming adds "joint".

That happened within moments of the first M9 being handed to a soldier. :D

I thought we're using 124gr FMJs...isn't 124gr NATO standard?
Are we actually using 115gr?

Systems----wonder what the definition of systems is.
Think it was in 2006, Joint Cheifs sent out invitation for new handgun trials,
then cancelled months later. (Rumor had it some qualifications: DA, caliber starts with 4 ) I see the words systems and start thinking 'starwars'.
Very Interesting!!

I'd say that "if" the DOD is really serious this time, the new pistol will look an awful lot like the Glock 21SF......( and no I'm not a big Glock booster, I'm a HiPower fan.) There's just something that says the 21SF will get the nod.
I know there was the stipulation about the external manual safety and all that, but the wide spread use of the G17 & 19 in Iraq & Afghanistan amongst the various Special Operations units and amongst the various light infantry units that were AWG trained & supplied has conclusively proven that U.S.troops won't "shoot their eye out" with the "evil Glock" and it's lack of an external safety.
But then again, we are talking about the bean counters...and we all know the bean counters nearly always get their way, what with controlling the purse strings and all............so who knows?

They did just add a nice, useless manual safety to the XD. Maybe the military will consider the XD45.

These posts about a new DoD/M-9 pistol just never seem to stop...
I'm sure the US military/DoD will set up new pistol testing and may even select a new M-9 sidearm but not for YEARS!!!!
Message boards will jam with posts about the HK, SIGsauer, Beretta, Ruger, Taurus, Glock, etc models that may and I mean MAY be selected for advanced testing by the US Armed Forces/DoD but let's slow down, take a breath and wait for a more detailed press release or media report.
Rusty
PS: I'd go with an ambi version of the HK P-2000/P-30, :D in .45acp or a .40Super type round.
