Where would you go?

If you were going to leave the USA and move to a different country, where would you go? Realizing that most places have much stricter gun laws than here, what would you be willing to accept?

Where to, and why? This doesn't have to be just about guns, but that's obviously important too.

In almost every country, wouldn't you have to become a citizen to take advantage of their "largesse" in respect to firearms privileges?

I think the US may be the only country where legal resident aliens are afforded the right to keep and bear arms.

Someone check me on the above.

But: were I younger, and if I could retain US citizenship, I would say Switzerland, France or Belgium, in that order.

Because I like mountains, garlic, and I could get to like diamonds.

Alaska is the only foreign country I would be willing to relocate to. The advantages? Almost all of them speak English as a first language and their laws reflect their appreciation to be left alone. If only I could take the cold!

I personally couldn't/wouldn't live anywhere else...

Unless my company was paying me some serious jack to move...And I still wouldn't like it.

BTW, why do you ask? Is this just a hypothetical or do you have a chance?

February 5, 2008, 09:46 PM
No, it's mostly hypothetical. I'm just curious as to how the other members feel. I was talking to a friend about living abroad today, and it made me think about such things.

I've gotta agree with Kim, I'd like my own island. Y'all can come visit if you like, but you've gotta bring your own ammo!

Lots of other factors to consider, but I've always thought favorably about Finland. Lots of woodlands, a healthy hunting culture, and fierce independence of their own.

Switzerland has a lot going for it, but with limited resources I don't think they are looking for immigrants. Swiss houseguests have told us that you must wait many years to get a place to park your boat on the lake. I don't think I've got that many years left!

Probably Suriname or thereabouts would be the best fit for me, but I like it here just fine.

Nowhere. I'm not jumping any boarders just because things might get rough.
Stay and push for change, make things better here. I can't see any reason
why I would not continue to call the USA home. If things got to the point where
I had to leave here, thats all the more reason for me to stay.

Why? English common law. Trial by jury. Soon to be replaced by sharia law! I would never move to any of thes eplaces permanently. If I had to pick a place to which to move, outside of the USA, it would have to be warm, and guns would have to be accesible if not necessarily legal, though I would hope for legal. Rifles and shotguns would be good enough for me, so maybe Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil.

I'm not going anywhere unless I have the bankroll to live on my own terms, armed as I please. Preferably, if I'm gonna leave, I'd want to go to a nice, pleasantly anarchic 3rd world country, and set myself up as either El Jefe or at least "That Crazy Rich Yanqui with all the guns who has the police on payroll".

Short of that, or buying my own island and raising the Foxtrot Flag over it, I'm staying put.

Once you're a resident ,firearms ownership is not very difficult.Even visitors can get a permit with a little persistence and baksheesh.(payola)
Hundreds of gringos are legally packing in this semi-tropical paradise.
I say semi because it can get a little dicey in areas of Guat City and the mountainous regions.Baseball bats and knives are the weapons of choice ,but guns are becoming more prevalent among the glue sniffing teen BG's.
All in all,one of the few countries in the Western Hemisphere ,outside the USA, where its realistic to carry.

Outside of the 'own your own island' thing - which is really the way to go, there's terraforming, building your own land like those folks in Dubai.

But realistically anywhere like a a smallish island/country where you could Free State them, i.e. push the politics in a favorable direction by pushing the demographics and getting a few thousand gun owners to move with you.

Thought about trying to go to NZ a few years ago. More sheep than people and actively looking for skilled immigrants. Amazing environments and scenery, couple of "must see before you die" spots. The gun thing was a bit of a sticking point, it seemed like a) self defense was frowned on, and b) you could own pretty much any long gun you wanted, but pistols were impossible.

Always thought Mauritius would be nice; continental flavor, exotic locale, tropical weather.

My wife is from there and she has taken me twice. Of course I would have to get whatever license is required to own / carry a handgun.

My wifes nephew tells me that with the right payment to the right person you can get nearly anything you want. Just give me enough money to buy a large piece of property and house, reliable vehicles, a selection of guns, dogs to guard the house, and a few locals that are loyal to me (or should I say the money I give them) and I would be fine.

I've thought about this a good bit. My choice would definitely be the islands of Palau.

The country has a representative democracy with direct relations with the US...the currency is the USD...3/4 of the population are Christian...English and Palauan are the official languages...the average temp is 82 degrees, and the islands are outside of the typhoon zone. Also, there are supposedly a lot of WWII American and Japanese "artifacts" scattered around the islands.

There are supposedly no poisonous snakes on the islands, and although a famous lagoon is populated with millions of jelly fish, they're stingless.

How about seccession? One tiny state with its own seaport so we can engage in international commerce. Form our own tiny Coast Guard and Gendarmarie Nationale. I want to be Minister of Propaganda and Culture.

Actually, Switzerland wouldn't take me and I don't know enough German to get by (French & Italian) also helpful. I don't want to go to Europe and Canada is too frozen (and they hate guns more than our own politicos do). I wouldn't mind Australia, but I can't bring any guns other than muzzleloaders with me. I'm of two minds on this one. First mind says that I only speak Americanized English and that the only things I truly care about in this life are the family farm (and freedoms that go with it) and my family and friends. I can lay low and live off the land (though grandpa didn't really have the opportunity to teach me how, Hank Jr.), and support my own life. But I won't live to see the day when someone takes any firearms from me while I sit back and do nothing. I live in the United States of America, like the previous generations of my family back to 1789 (and they were just colonials back in 1750). No I'm going to stay and sling lead if that's what it takes. On my own terms, so to speak. Petoria anyone??

The other mind is that with my age, I may in fact live to see the fall of the country I've grown up in, or at least a mutation of it beyond anything I'd recognize right now. If I can't have certain rights, then I'm leaving. I'd head for Scotland. Leave the guns and take the clubs. That and after a while I'd have that sweet accent. The one thing I'll always take with me is the knowledge of survival. And engineering. And how to hit a solid 2 iron. Or throw a Curveball. Dang, they don't have baseball in Scotland......well Option B is out!

I like the Philippines. Citizens may carry handguns, Lot of military weapons.

They even have a VA Hospital. A lot of EX-Pats. Almost all Filipino's speak english too. Up until recently it was mandatory in their schools.

Warm, and growing. Just stay off of the islands of Mindanao, Palawan and Sulu. Those Islands are predominant Muslims with all the problems that ensues. That is where the rebels are, and have been for over a hundred years.

But relax, there are over 7,000 islands that make up the Philippines.

Why should we leave? Why can't we just kick the liberals out of our United States? They're the ones who want a new nation. Instead of letting them transform this one into a new one, just send them to a new one that already exists, AND has their brand of politics, like the UK. No guns and free healthcare for all! YAY! In the meantime, I'll keep my US and it's Constitutionally protected freedoms.

It's on the short list of countries that have widespread (and legal) gun ownership. The government is based on the American model. Plus their preferred handgun of choice is the 1911.
