I am going to get a target pistol for my wife to use. Any recommendations? I am thinking of .22 to start off with.

You should take her to the gun shop and let her pick out the one that works best for her.

I'd say you can't go wrong with a nice Browning Buckmark, Ruger MKII or Ruger 22/45. But if it's for her I'd take her out and let her handle them herself and see which feels best to her.

you can't reliably put her down with a .22; you really should consider the .45 ACP.
I wouldn't think that was funny even if you were my friend.

If you are strictly going to shoot targets then something along the line of a Buckmark Camper is fun.
If you plan on taking her into the realm of self defense then go to a place that rents and let her try a few of the bigger guns.
I tried to start my wife on a 22 which she hated so we went straight to a 642 airlight and a Glock 27. I think she is some sort of shooting savant or something. I just say do this, or read that, watch this, etc and she absorbs it and does it.
So what I am saying is if you are headed towards self-defense ler her lead.

+1
Let her do the picking. A .22 pistol is a great place to start.

I'd have her read a little bit with
http://www.corneredcat.com/
then take her and let her decide what she would like. A .22 is a fine introductory pistol. But I would rather rent one or borrow one before I buy one. Once she's up to efficiency then she'll have a better idea of what she might like.

+1 on www.corneredcat.com for both, followed by letting her pick her own.

Best to let her pick it out. .22 is a great one to start with IMO as lots of practice cheap, not too intimidating. I'd have her check out a Walther P-22, a Ruger Mark II might be a little barrel heavy depending on her arm strength. If she likes the Walther get her one of those cool viridian laser sights.

I'd think a .22 would be the best for both of you! Every house should have one... get a pair of 'em and you don't have to take turns.

Dun, dun, dun! You said the word let! ;)
Sound advice above. If it's going to be her pistol, she should be the one to pick the gun that'll suit her best.
A few recommendations:
Ruger 22/45
Browning Buckmark
S&W K22
S&W 617
S&W M41
Those listed will be accurate, a good size, and easy to shoot.

I've made a few posts about this, so have others. When she goes to choose a handgun (and a .22 is great fun for targets), she needs to know HOW to choose. Finding pants that fit is easy, match your waist and inseam with the label. There's a lot more going on when you wrap your hand around the grip of a handgun. The best way is to find someone that A) you trust to not be a schill for a particular brand and B) knows what the blue blazes their talking about. Have them show you in person.

my sincere apologies, I did not mean to offend; the title of the thread struck me as tongue in cheek.

As many have said here, a .22 is the way to start. She can learn trigger control and with the cost of ammo she will be able to practice enough to develop her shooting skills before moving to something bigger.

ZMP CTR,
You can start her out on any caliber, but if you have a 22 handy it is a good way to go. If you go for a higher caliber first, keep it restricted to one with light to moderate recoil, like 9MM.
All the best,

I say you just keep bringing pistols home until she likes one of them...But start with the ones you don't think she will want.:)

Ok, that last comment about bringing home ones she won't like is a classic.
But, most women have small hands and grip is key. Lots of .22's are big in the grip and not comfy. My wife has very small hands, but she handles a full size 1911 with no problem because it's skinny.
JMB was the man, I think you'll be surprised at how well she'll like a 1911 style.
Check out the Kimber .22's 1911's, the mosquito (which ok has issues, but it's small), S & W model 17 (revolver)
but yeah, let her go to the gunstore with you and let her pick and choose while you look away. don't force her to get anything.
adn good move on starting with a .22. cheap to shoot practice, etc and fun for her. she'll get sucked in, just like the rest of us.

Are you looking to get her a gun for target plinking or for competition.
First take her to a gun shop where the guy behind the counter is informed about what a woman uses and doesn't show her something stupid like a S&W 360 in scandium and then have him say something like "just shoot it once and clean it and put it in your purse sweety"
Really you should go to Cornered cat and read first it is enlightening.
Some great guns
Colt Woodsman 1st series
S&W 41
High standard
Ruger Mk I or II with either the long skinny barrel or the Slabside.
Buckmark
Revolvers
S&W 17 or 18 and what ever other iteration of same i.e. 617.
S&W 34 or 35
Colt revolvers are also great, I just do not know them as well.

You can't pick a gun for your wife any more than you could pick her shoes. You've gotta' try them on and see what works for you :D

Wow, that was pretty genius of the owner to allow that to happen.

Walther in .32ACP
I am quite sure she will like the moderate to nill recoil yet it is enough to stop an intruder, carry in purse, etc.

Get her a Glock G19.
I've never met any woman that didn't like the G19.

I may not have been married long, but I've been married long enough to know not to get between a woman and her accessorizing!
