Voted Browning. Mostly due to the fact that I prefer the autoloading shotguns for hunting purposes. If I were more into trap or skeet shooting I may go for something different if I ever decided to jump on the O/U bandwagon.
Semi-auto Browning Gold/A-5
Pump action Remington 870 Wingmaster
Side by side Browning (don't know if they still make them, but I have an older one

As a reason for picking Remington, that's like voting for Budweiser as "world's best beer." And I say that as an 870 and 1100 owner.

What's amazing about the 1100 is that it works at all, once you look inside the thing with a keen eye. That IS an accomplishment.:) Mine works well after 37 years. That does deserve kudos, for a shotgun that once was relatively cheap and is just an assemblage of stampings. But it sure ain't "the best".

Remingtons are like laws and sausages. You don't want to know how any of them are made.

870s suck, cheap bargain shelf crap, akin to Maverick.

My vote goes to Holland and Holland.:D

I didn't say I could afford the best. My safe is full of bargain shelf crap. :D The best of the crap is Winchester. I'd go Browning, though, if I could afford one. DOH!

I own and like older Rem. 1100 3" and newer 11-87 20 English stock.

I'm in posession of my sons Rem. 870 turkey gun (all in black) with the 24 inch barrel. This gun is a great game getter.

I also wanted to vote for the Savage family of side-by-sides. 311A's and Fox B's.

How I rate my guns in order:

Remington: 3200, 11-87, 870

Kriegoff: K-80

Browning: Superposed, BT-100, Citori, Auto 5

SKB: 85T

Plus sundry others: Fox, Beretta, Benelli, Winchester, Savage, Ithaca, NEF/H&R, CD, Mossberg/Maverick.

Like many here, I like shotguns. But if ever limited to only one, it would be an 870. It will fullfill any social/hunting/game requirement if I do my part.

Perhaps, but the title of the thread is "top shotgun", not "top bargain shelf pump". Given the choice of a quality hand fitted Holland and Holland or Perazzi or an 870, you would honestly call the 870 a "better" gun? Not me. You might think it the "best you can afford", but "top shotgun"?

For defense:
If talking semi auto/pump then Benelli's M4 Super 90.
of
If talking "any" then USAS-12 Fully Auto

For Sport:
If talking semi auto/pump then Beretta

If talking double barrel then it's a tie between Purdey and Holland & Holland.

I'll give you Parker.

But the other two, nope. The two Perazzi owners I know who come to mind most immediately are young competitors. They don't have the guns because they're rich, or in the least bit snobbish, and the guns aren't even particularly pretty.

Of course, plenty of wealthy shooters buy guns like K's and P's and shoot them poorly. But there are levels of competition where those sorts of guns are all you will find, and it has everything to do with features and appropriate design, not gun snobbery.

I'd be interested to see one of these babies in action.

I have a good semi auto which I like, and also a cheap O/U which I can normally outshoot my buddies with their $2000 guns. But they're not such a good shot, so it's not that hard.

I believe in quality and own many $1000+ guns, but have yet to really invest good money into a shotgun.

These kind of surveys are like asking to name favorite motorized vehicle. There are so many different applications in shotgunning that to pick one "top shotgun" brand is folly. No one brand or type is suitable for all applications. My top choice on the clay target ranges is not the same as when something goes bump in the night or if I'm chasing pheasants in the field.

Similarly it depends on your available financial resources. Given unlimited funds anyone's choices would be different. The man who can't justify or afford the cost of a Perazzi still wants to think if his gun as a "top shotgun" and for him it is. Ultimately the target whether clay or feathered has no idea how much your gun cost only whether the pellets are on the mark.

An 870 is a top shotgun. So too is a McKay Brown costing over 100 times as much. A direct comparison between the two makes no sense. Different guns, different purposes, different financial requirements.

There are actually a couple different things going on here. You certainly don't need a high priced gun to be a good shooter. However, it's a mistake to say that none of them will do any better than Winchester, Remington, Browning, etc...

*whups*

I had to edit that post, my fingers got away from me.

No, I do not have any 870s, though I have had in the past.

Disasters hit, and all of mine are gone.
I did buy an Express some years ago, tested, evaluated and had it put back.
Some will recall a fella "had to get his dad a HD ASAP".
Short version - barrel was whacked, PGO put on and his dad hated the damn thing, got made at this son, and he did not "need a HG" as his dad had 1100s he was most proficient with - just this boy "said" a person could not defend with a 1100.

Son...was into tack-tickle. He stole his kids college fund and spent something like $30,000 in one year on new guns and playing games.
He is now divorced, his dad disowned him.

That gun, yeah I was there when gun buddy did this, and I helped.
It was a very good eye opener for other folks, so sacrificing that gun, saved a lot of folks some grief and educated others.

Gun is up North, with full stock, and the short barrel had a choke system installed.
That dad did not want it! I knew a gal that would be interested and she got it from him.
It does grouse, woodcock, HD, and other duties now.

I have one shotgun off site, and hopefully that sentimental thing will be stay safe.

I have one shotgun, a Youth H&R Topper, in 20 ga, with fixed mod choke and factory recoil pad.
That is it...and I am good to go with this one shotgun.

No thanks,
Too many years of correct basic fundamentals, gun fit, and add , some say I have fired a million rounds with bone stock shotgun configs, to fell clay, game, and have carried for serious hi risk use, to change now.

I want to be mobile and have the shotgun do what I need, and not be restricted by any stock configs, or design .

i.e
Win SX1 I have only fired 300,000 thru, still runs, but it has BTDT and in blowing sand, rain, sleet, hail, snow, mud, rain, tornado, fire, flood, and incoming rounds...

300,000 rounds through a shotgun? I doubt any shotgun would take over 1/4 of million rounds and still run.

300,000 would mean that if one shoot 100 rounds every day it will take him 3000 days, which is 8.21 years of consecutive shooting at the rate of 100 rounds per day!

I think if so, then it should be in some sort of a record book.

Firepower! - I personally shot about 22,000 shells last year, and that includes taking almost three months off for hunting instead of clay-target busting. For me, I was shooting three to four times per week and during the peak of the season would shoot around 1000 shells per week. That only equates to a flat or so each time out. When practicing, a flat will often last only 2 to 3 hours.

There are some competitors who shoot a LOT more than I do.

300,000 isn't unreasonable. Really.

Firepower!
February 10, 2008, 06:36 AM
Agree, but to shoot 300,000 will take a lot of time. I understand you 22000 rounds season, but how many seasons you repeat that. We are talking more than 13 times what you shot!
I perosnally think, although not impossible, perhaps a typo with additional zero!

300,000 isn't unreasonable. Really.

Not unreasonable whatsoever. Even a recreational shooter can easily shoot 10,000 rounds in a year. If the shooter starts at 25 he's gone past 300,000 by age 55 with a lot of shooting left to do. And that's just a weekend warrior.

I know former Olympic competitors who regularly shot a thousand rounds of week in practice.

I've seen guns with over 300,000 rounds shot, a couple with a lot more than that. They'd had small parts replaced along the way but not so much wear and tear that they needed to be junked.

Don't take this wrong, as I mean no disrespect.
Also, not bragging, just fact.

I started shooting young and was raised in a certain era, with certain values and all.

i.e. Vietnam war was going on, I had folks I knew over there, as we all did at the time.
I had some backers, back then, keep in mind I graduated HS in '73.

Now one of our own, or that of of one of our own that was in 'Nam, had served, come back without a leg or some other body part, or in a body bag...had needs.

I got paid for every clay I shot until I missed. That money went to wives, kids, family, funeral homes, hospital bills ...

I used a shotgun to raise money , doing this and other shotgun games.
All this firearm stuff was never about me, instead others.

Those ten rounds of skeet in one day, they were not for me.
They were for getting money for those in need. I "had" to practice!

16 rds of skeet and I get my butt chewed out to not shoot. I am in a mode, and my gun taken away. Again I "had" to practice!
I got a little girl, of one our folks dying of Leukemia, and dammit to hell, she is going to Disney Land with her mom and dad and dammit I have to be the best I can and not miss a target.

Screw the rules! I don't care about sanctioned shoots, or if side bets are on the up and up.
I got backers, private folks, they paid my entry fee, to shoot this game in a remote area.

Money Gun is the nickname for a old 870 in 28 ga, it has ~ 300,000 round through it too.
It has spare parts, including trigger groups with a safety.
The trigger group it has had it the most, all its life is the one the safety was removed on purpose.

You ever shot for $5 a clay, ever shot for a bonus bird, one nobody knows when and where it will appear that is worth $1000, or $2000, how about $5,000.

Focus is the key, I and mine could not think of that little girl, her family, the trip, nothing, but the leading most edge of a clay going 55 mph.

Damn straight I practiced! I was young and had not fully learned not to take serious so serious.

Dammit I hit that bird worth $2500 that day. Low 5 had been kicking my butt, I had been chipping behind that bird, it was raining, and the wind had kicked up.

The wind hit that target and it went down and fast, and I was on it, it waving up, down and I normally shoot right at the stake this bird, I had to let it "settle".

You could have heard a pin drop when that bonus bird come out.

I dusted it to smithereens! I had leaned so far forward to stay on it, I went face forward after I slapped trigger, followed through.

That little girl and her family got that wish, I did not care about anything but doing my damnedest to make sure she did!

She came home and died not long after.

Good shooters are made - not born Missledine.
He told me that personally, and he wrote it many times.

Not one damn word about a "top shotgun" , instead the shooter being the key.

I have also watched a live pigeon fly on out of the circle , I did not get onto fast enough, that pigeon was worth $5,000.

There are shotgunners and there are those that own shotguns.
