House Bill 1043 would prevent government agencies from confiscating firearms from law-abiding citizens during a disaster or state of emergency, such as occurred after Hurricane Katrina. Similar bills have been passed by 22 states and at the federal level.
Generally Indiana has no problems passing bills that reinforce the second amendment. I recall seeing this bill in the last session. Why are we struggling with this? I wrote a letter to my congressperson; did you?

I would write your state representative and state senator as well as Mitch.
The answer to your question is time. Property tax reform is eating up a lot of time. I would not anticipate any action this year. Next session, absolutely.

why do we need legislation to protect us from something that is already unconstitutional?
its not much different than legislation to ban government from confiscating watches at the super market.

I think this took a backseat to the property tax debacle.

This is a house bill so I contacted my house member Joe Donnelly. Isn't he a congressperson?
We shouldn't need protection from something that is already obvious but it never hurts to reinforce it.
It isn't like this bill is long or complicated. I admit I am not very familiar with the process.

I just e-mailed my representative (Russ Stilwell) to see if he could give me a status update on the bill. He (or someone) is normally pretty fast on answering my questions.

I just received the reply:
Lee -
My name is Megan and I am Representative Stilwell's legislative assistant. He asked me to contact you about your email below.
HB 1043, authored by Reps Koch and Cheatham, was assigned to the House Interstate and International Cooperation Committee. Unfortunately the bill did not receive a hearing in the Committe, which means it did not make it to the House floor for a vote.
Please don't hesitate to contact me or Representative Stilwell with any additional questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Megan

"why do we need legislation to protect us from something that is already unconstitutional?"
Ask the folks in Louisiana. Here in Mississippi, we didn't get the jack-booted thugs taking our arms away from us. Here, the concept of an armed populace is considered a GOOD thing.
