Has anyone made a bullet trap??

I'm thinking about making a bullet trap in my basement to test some handloads. I seem to remember reading somewhere that someone had used a large diameter PVC pipe, capped at one end and filled with sand. Would this work? Has anyone here made their own?

:) Don't know if I'd trust PVC to contain a bullet that hit sideways; kinda scary in my opinion.:uhoh:

I had a test fire tube in my old shop years ago that I made out of a 10' long piece of 10" steam pipe, with one end welded shut, and about 6' of sand. (4' of sand is plenty, I think.) I buried it at an angle out thru the basement wall. I had a baffle made from a garbage can filled with foam rubber on the live end. That silenced it pretty good.

I fired everything in there up to a .375 H&H, and never had a problem. Most bullets were stopped within a foot or two of sand if I remember correctly. ;)

Hope this helps. Safe Shooting! - "gunsmither"

I built one once but it wasn't successful. Cheese didn't seem to work and I didn't know what else to use for bait.
