Wow.

Nice piece, but (1) not always easy to find ammo, (2) expensive spare parts, and (3) heavy, at nearly ten pounds.

SAMCO has some in stock at $160 per case: http://www.samcoglobal.com/ammo.html Scroll down towards the bottom.

Thanks. I've got a chance at on in MINT condition. I've about given up at finding a nice, shooter-grade '03A3....

What would be involved in rebarrelling it to .30-06?

The magazine is too short to take most 30-06 loads.

Dunno. I shoot 'em. I don't fix 'em.

I think I'd sooner start reloading and securing a supply of everything necessary to support that before I had a 'smith gut it.

Spending a lot more money than it would cost to buy a .30-06 FN 49, and ruining a nice gun. If that's what you want just buy a .30-06, the 7x57 FN 49s are nice collectable rifles.

If you want an '06 "go to rifle", how about an M1 Garand?

A friend and I struggled all one summer trying to get his FN 49 Venezuelan surplus 7mm to run on handloads. No soap, even though it shot fine with any factory load available at the time. He finally just bought a supply of FN "cartuchos ordinarios" noncorrosive hardball and called it quits.

the 7x57 FN 49s are nice collectable riflesThat's a fact. The Egyptian 8mm variants are going for stupid money, and the 7x57s are far more desirable.

I like the rifle; it's reliable, has decent sights, and is reasonably accurate. It is, as has been noted, also a beast to lug around. For SHTF situations, it's no worse than a Garand and probably better than many other choices.. For longer TEOTWAWKI type stuff, the chambering would likely be a drawback.

The 7x57 SAFN is a real collector's item. Some SAFN's were made in .30'06 IIRC, but you don't want to hack at any of them. You'd be throwing a grand down the toilet. Not to mention destroying a very rare historical rifle.

There you go, that's excellent advice.

I have one, mines 8 mm,I have found info on the fn 49,the rifle mag, that you can get when your a NRA memer had a good story on the FN49,they said how many dif, countrys had them and used them,Did You know they have a gas adjustment built into them, its under the forend, thats to adjust how much gas it need to cycle,VIa dif, kinds or type or ammo, I bought mine years a go,when they were easy to find and ammo was so much cheaper then now,I bought 4 cases way back when,,And my gun was in new cond,Im not sure how much i paid for it,but i did see the gun trader had them worth almost 600,they are built like a truck, heavy too,,And i think if you want 3006,then you should buy one, dont cut and gut the 49,

:D

It's not too often you find one in this condition.Got it a few years ago it's practically mint.

I had every intention of shooting it,someday I may,but just couldn't bring myself to do it.So some of you might think it's a waste but this is basically my one safequeen.

I bought it like that.Saw it at a gunshow and snagged it.The guy I bought it from,I told him I was looking forward to trying it,he said are you sure you wanna do that?,I don't think it's ever been issued.

I thought about, and it became a safequeen.I still might try it one day,a few rounds of quality ammo probably wouldn't hurt resale value.

I saw one in the same condition recently on the net,the guy wants a astronomical amount for it though, upwards of 2k.
