Now that most of us own firearms, what do we buy new ones for most often?

I would vote "Other", but I think a Mod should just add the category "Plinking"...then I'll vote.

Uum, plinking. I just love putting lead downrange at whatever inanimate object has been put down there to be shot at.

Well, as my self-defense needs and 2nd Amendment duties are covered, I mostly purchase them to fill niches in my collection. The fact that pretty much any of them can be used for other things is a bonus. :)

At this point in the game, anything I pick up would be a combination of collecting/target shooting. If it isn't something I want to / am willing to shoot, it don't go into the collection.

blue86buick I should have put (plinking) after Target shooting. I listed it as "Target shooting" meant to cover both formal and informal.

Every one of my firearms are owned for 2nd Amendment affirmation. Many serve dual purpose. I shot a javelina with my duty gun, a 1911 .45 Kimber. I qualified with an old Colt .38 Special (6" Officer's Model Match) that I bought for my collection and for target shooting and competition, but which I have carried hunting, and even killed two javelina with.

I've got a .30 Carbine that can't decide what it wants to be.

My old 12 ga. 1100 dove gun has shot skeet, trap, qualified as a duty gun, and serves as home defense.

But all are 2nd Amendment affirmations.

This should have been a ''check box'' ..... multiple choice poll ...... one category just does not cut it!! I'd tick most I think!

I would still consider a CCW purchase, a HD purchase, a hunting purchase, a plinking purchase - etc ...... the list is long!

I consider my 2nd Amendment duties done with a good rifle that I train with. (Or thus my American Gov't 121 teacher taught me...)

I consider my self-defence duties done with a good pistol that can be carried concealed.

Everything else is gravy. If it can pull double duty, then hey, bonus! ;)

Or- purely civic duty. Those of us who can afford to do so should support local merchants and buy good American made products. Otherwise the US will soon cease to have any industrial capability at all.

In order:

To do a type of shooting (competitive or otherwise) that I can't do with my current collection.
To have an example of a particular firearm mechanism that I want to learn about/be able to work on.
Spares.

Right now, the guns I'm looking at are for fun & maybe IDPA/competition but ultimately, all my guns have the potential for use as self defense guns.

It's hard to choose one reason because there isn't just one reason. I got mine for: employment, the range, self-defense, to collect and because it's my right.

( Sorry for the caps) Couse I usually have more than one answer allowed! I have guns for a lot of reasons many of them are on the list provided but the poll allows only 1 answer. oh well just venting

I'm in the process of buying yet another .22 caliber target shooting pistol these days. I like my other guns, mind, but the match .22s are the tip-top best.

I shine my head with RIG and use Hoppe's aftershave.

Some guns just follow me home.

Greeting's All-

Actually, I could vote for two category's:

a) Self Defense and b) Target Shooting

as I don't collect anything but MONEY!

Best Wishes,

I voted for Target Shooting since that is what I do the most with my guns.

But I also have guns for hunting, and all my guns are for Self Defense.

I suppose collecting but I'm not a serious collector. That is, you won't find a "one of every model of any make." It's whatever suits my fancy or whim at the time. About the only thing I have a bunch of are Garands & sniper rifles & left handed 45s.

Rights are like muscles... if you don't use them they will wither and die.

An interesting collection of replies. When my firearm count was 1st growing I went with hunting 1st, then my self-defense needs got filled, then collecting started. It's bounced around a bit for a few years after that. Now days it's most often another hunting gun that "I don't need". :D

All except collecting and investment.

The poll should allow multiple picks.

My last purchase was hunting related, the one before that self-defence related, and the one before that hunting related.

My next one... I haven't made up my mind yet. Kimber TLE (SD) or a Winchester Classic Featherweight (H)? Hmmm. Great, now my head hurts. ;)

I voted "Hunting", cuz that will be my next one, I believe. But I agree multiple responses are needed.

This one for defense/CCW (Kel-Tec P3AT when available)
This one for hunting (a .223 boltgun)
This one for games (an O/U for sporting clays)
This one for collecting (a K-31, if there are any left by then)

etc, etc.

Blowing up inanimate objects in a safe, controlled and legal manner.

Self defense is a distant second. If I was a 5'2" woman instead of a 6'2" man, I would put self-defense first and carry about 6 guns at a time. :D
