Setting on L1A1 Gas Regulator?

February 10, 2008, 05:04 PM
I have a new to me L1A1 rifle and was wondering what the average # was to set mine on. Right now to get it to eject it is set on 3, is this normal or should I have it checked out?

Well the recommended way is not to set an average but to start with the gas port wide open, so much so that the rifle doesn't even cycle.

Then close it off one click at a time til it reliably cycles with whatever ammo you are using. That's the best way to minimize the beating the rifle takes. So if you did that and you wind up at 3 then you're doing it right.

On my G1 I end up at 3, 4, and sometimes 5 depending on the ammo I'm using. 7 is wide open.

Thanks for the info. If I wouldn't have been so lazy this whole post could have been for gone. Searched this forum and found the answers to my own question. Have to start remembering to look before posting. Thanks again.

OK TexasRifleman, here is a pic. Mind you that this rifle suffered from extensive rust damage due to neglect. But on the up side, I only paid $225 for it.

What names are on that receiver? Am I seeing "Imbel"?

You have a type 3 upper-receiver, sand-cut bolt-carrier (for added reliability in sandy conditions) - but that butt-hole stock has to go, man; it's a travesty, a crime against nature, a freak, an abberation.

Looks like a Century on a Imbel build to me.

It's a century L1A1, I think. Where did you get it for 225 bucks, and do they have any more? Century be damned, I'll pay to fix up an FAL at that price!

It's a long story but a guy I work with had a brother that passed away. While cleaning out his place of residence, he found this rifle under his bed. He wanted $400, but with all the rust I couldn't pay that amount. Yes, it is a Century L1A1 using an Imbel receiver. Short of needing to be refinished, it shoots just fine and everythings seems to function correctly as best I can tell.

it used to be 9 or 10 that was normal and turn it down if it started jamming
or two if there was a curious a yank about :D or you didn't like the bloke next to you and wanted to fling brass at him :D

The Imbel upper-receiver alone is worth $400-$450 these days - you did good :D
