February 10, 2008, 08:29 PM
i would like to have one of the new england single shots but the only one i have seen was used at a pawn shot with a cheap BSA scope for 300 bucks:eek:

anyne got a line for me on where to find one and what thay may be going for,

I already have a XR100 in 223 and a 700 in 204 so i figurd this would beat the pants off a 17HMR within 150 yards anything else after that and Ill break out one of the other big boys

Forgive me If I am wrong, but $300 seems like a low-end price for a rifle chambered for .22 Hornet. I have two Hornets, and I got both for what I thought was a great deal, but not cheap. Do you mean "Cheap" in regards to quality? I would have to say that the Handi-rifle is not a cheap rifle, just less expensive than most. Unless you are going to reload, there is nothing cheap about .22 Hornet ammo.

Your pawn shop owner is looking for a 24K fool. You can get a good-to-excellent .22 Hornet - used, for $350-$400 and not be burdened with a shoddy scope that you're going to have to replace.

Gunbroker.com usually has Savage model 40 rifles running from $300-$400 and the NEF rifles are an obscenely huge joke compared to the Savage 40.

But, if you really want just a cheap gun with "Hornet" stamped on it go to Walmart and get one of their $239.95 specials. It will still be better, and cheaper, than the gun at your pawn shop.

Good Luck !

$300 is a crazy price for a NEF, be patient, watch gunbroker and local shops and you will find a much better deal.

I missed the point that the dealer was asking $300 FOR a handi rifle! He must admire the caliber as much as I do. Keep shopping around, you'll find it.

While I don't own any NEF rifles, I did mount a 4x Nikon onto a 22-250 for one of our employees to use as a truck coyote rifle. I was impressed by how well it shot for a $250 rifle. My Hornet is an Anschutz from 1947, but if I was having to buy a new one, I'd spend about $475 for a new CZ.

I would have to agree with theCZ, if you wanted to pick up a rifle that you would be happy with for a very long time it would be hard to beat the CZ. The only reason I don't have one (a hornet) is that I have a CZ .221 Fireball which fills the gap for me.

I passed up a CZ-527 Mannlicher stocked .22 Hornet @ $425.00 because it was missing the rear sight.
A used NEF single shot with a $35.00 BSA scope is worth about $175.00 tops.
Shop around.

I would agree with the suggestion on the Savage.

I wouldn't sell my Winchester Model 43 22 Hornet for nuffin, though. I found it for 375 and never regretted it. :)

Your range goals are also spot on. You will own anything under 25 lbs (and over 25lbs in some cases) at 150 or less. I suggest the Sierra blitzkings in 40-45 grain if you handload with a medium dose of 2400 or 4227. Mine actually also likes H-110 but I prefer sticking with extruded powders in that small case. Alot safer....

I know they aren't cheap, but you can also look at the Contenders. Think NEF only a bit better quality. :)

And more choice of barrels and easier to swap.
