Where do ya buy Shotgun Ammo?

This may sound like a ridiculous question, but I went to the giant box sporting good store today[Sportsman's Warehouse] to buy 00 buckshot and slugs in 2 3/4" for the new 12 guage. This is in metropolitan Denver.

After searching and asking for help, I found the only place they keep 00 Buckshot is on the special shelves where they have the high quality rifle & pistol ammo.

They must have had 15 pallets on the floor with all kinds of birdshot, but the slugs were in short supply. I think I paid around $3.29 for a box of Federal "Power-Shok" 00 Buckshot, but there's only FIVE SHELLS to a box.

Then there is the SLUG issue. There's "rifled" and other stuff and I don't know how to choose a slug for a 12 guage.

Do you guys buy from small independent stores?

I buy most shotgun ammo at Wal Mart.

Slug/buckshot I usually buy at a local gun store. But deer season is over so most retailers have either sold off their buckshot/slug inventory or put it into storage. It can be hard to find outside deer season.

Small shot at Walmart. Deer loads at Dick's or another big box. You can buy a lifetime supply of buckshot and slugs for little more than a flat of small shot. I do not buy from Gander Mountain. They just can't compete with the other big boxes. I strolled through GM when they had their grand opening and never went back. I still have sticker shock. Dick's usually has the best pricing but they don't have enough in inventory much of the time. So, I buy most of my small shot at Walmart. They always have plenty.

I buy all my ammo online. It has better selection than any real life store could ever dream of having. Also, it's really easy to price shop.

Check out the value packs at Wal-Mart. $7-$8 per 15 rounds for 00 buck and rifled slugs.

You want rifled, not sabot.

I think the Wal-Marts are different. According to their location, they stock different stuff.

I didn't see any 00 buckshot at the one close to me, and in fact, there's little birdshot too.

What I expected to find was a box of 20 shells in 00 Buck, but don't they even make those? I didn't see that anywhere; just these little 5-shell boxes.

Are they shy, or what?

Thanks for the Jensen's tip. I'll go see those guys. They look like serious suppliers. A drive to Loveland is always nice, and besides, Valentine's day is coming.

Thanks Jaenak.

Now I've another dumb question for ya.

Do they ship ammo right to your door? Doesn't it have to go through a dealer or something?

I buy bird shot at my local wal mart, but my buck/slugs online at the sportsmansguide.com. If you use one of their $10 off coupons their prices are pretty hard to beat! I just picked up 50 rounds of centurion home defense buck(1 .69 cal ball and 7 #1 buck) and 50 rounds of wolf 00 buck from them.

At gun shops.

At the range.

From mail order discount places like Midway and CTD.

And on odd occasions, at big box stores...

Walmart when I can, but I'm going to try Kent fasteel next season and they don't carry it, so I'll have to pick up some at Bass Pro next time I'm up there. I have ordered from www.macksprairiewings.com, also. This is a duck and goose hunting mecca down here and we have the crappiest selection of steel and hevi shot probably in the friggin' country. Thank God for the net.

Academy. Nobody in the DFW area beats their prices that I have found. Cheapie Federal or Remington $39.95 a case. I bought Winchester Super Target last week for $46.00 per case.

Graf's (http://www.grafs.com) usually has what I need, and can ship it to my front door cheaper than I can buy it locally.

Yes, Walmart has them for $7-8 for 15 rounds of #00 buckshot (At most, about 53 cents a round) . This is the CHEAPEST you can find without going online. Ammoman.com has Wolf buckshot for 67 cents per round. Actually, it is cheaper than going online! I don't even know what type of primers are used or whether the hulls can be reloaded (I certainly don't see load data for them!).

But I roll my own for about 28-44 cents per round depending on components. I do this because I make about 1500-2000 per year! It's nice, because it takes you a lot of time to run through your components (you trim the wads and cut up the teflon wraps to size, which gives you more things to do if you're on a tight gasoline budget like I am and have a lot of time off from work).

Im fortunate enough to have a sportsmans wharehouse and cabellas close to me.

I buy winchester super x #8 by the case at cabellas for $40. I buy most of the other specialty loads at sportsmans because its a half hour closer and they are only $1 on average higher in price per what ever Im looking for. Cabellas poits usually accumulate fast enough so I dont pay for #8, I get it for free so to speak.

All of mine comes from out of my basement, except for the Winchester Platnium Slugs that my deer guns favors. Those come from whereever it's on sale. (Although I probably have enough for the next 10-15 deer seasons)

Thanks Clone! I did order from Sportsman's Guide and now I'm happy.

I realize that my question sounded a little stoopud, you know, as in:

"GEE, why not shop for ammo at a store? DUH!"

But it was motivated by the fact that the entire Sportsman's Warehouse did not even have more than 20 rounds of 00 Buck altogether. I was puzzled by little boxes of 5 shells per box. Whatever happened to 20 rounds per box ya know?

So far, you guys have steered me very straight. Thanks!
