I've been wanting a 590 for a while, and found a good deal on one online. However, the local Sportsman's Warehouse has a 500 Persuader in stock, and it appears to have the full-length mag tube just like the 590. What is the difference? I've put tons of shells through various 590's and love the balance and feel of the gun, and especially love the action. Are any of things different between the two models, or is the extra money for the 590 just paying for tacticool reputation?

The 590 holds more ammo. Go with the 590. The 500 would be a step down. Albeit a small one but a step down none the less.

590 comes with a bayonet lug and heat shield. It's tacti-cool!

What's a heat shield doing on a shotgun anyhow? It's not like you're putting 300 rounds per minute out of it and you need the heat shield to prolong the time between barrel changes.

Metal safety on 590, not a plastic one like the 500. Metal trigger guard on the 590, not a plastic one like the 500. The 590 barrel is slightly heavier (thicker). With the heatshield and bayonet lug, the 590 is tacticool and the 500 is plain jane.

Close but no cigar, Gary. the 590A1 has the heavy barrel, metal trigger guard, and metal safety. The standard 590 (mine is part number 50668) has plastic. For the metal stuff youd want part number 51663.

My friend has a 500 Persuader. Frankly I can't figure out what the 'heat shield' is for. Also that extra mag length really makes the gun nose heavy.

But hey, it's cool looking!

I just acquired a brand new 590 in a trade (thanks again, ApexinM3). I must say that I am rather impressed by how much more solid it feels than the 500 Persuaders we carried in Iraq. It is a part number 51668 I think. The gun is rather front heavy and I would not want to have to hold it on target for an extended length of time, but that really is my only complaint with this shotgun.

It has a heavier barrel than the Persuader. It has the Ghost Ring Sights, Bayo lug, and Speed Feed Stock which we didn't have on our Persuaders. Do I think it is worth spending the extra cash for the typical homeowner? Nope. I do think it is a more solidly built firearm, and would likely hold up longer in combat situation. I am well pleased with my 590, but would probably be just as well served by a Persuader in my home.

The 590 has a removable magazine cap which makes it easier to access and clean the mag tube. To maintenance the magazine on the 500, you'll have to remove the entire tube from the receiver(terminology). I don't think it's a huge problem, but some find it irritating. Overall, I've been pretty happy with the 500. I don't think either is a bad choice.

That would be the big difference. Plus the ghost rings if you happen to be looking at the 590 with them. Other wise there is no difference in assembly. Get the 500 and spend the rest on ammo.

I bought my 500 for $229. If I decide to add ghost rings I will still come in under the price of a 500.

I just bought a new 590 at Big 5 and it has a metal insert in the
end of the tube to prevent the spring from popping out
as you remove the cap. At first I thought it was permanent(making it
like the 500). But it will come right out...

Also, my stock had a ridiculously long length of pull of 14.5 in. I removed the recoil pad and cut an inch off the stock and installed a Limbsaver slip on. Its got a nice 13.25 inch length of pull now...
