Steyr AUG...like or no like?

What's the consensus on these rifles? The pre-ban AUG is available for a hefty sum, but the USR can be had for less.
Which color stock looks good to you...black, green, desert tan, white?

I've shot two or three of these, in various models. I hate to say it, given that some folks rave about them, but I really didn't like them. The trigger on all those I fired was very poor indeed... stacky, gritty, and hard to get a good let-off. The handling of a bullpup design is great in close quarters, but to do a rapid magazine change in a combat situation is hairy, to say the least.
If I had the money to spend on a pre-ban AUG, I'd probably invest in two pre-ban Daewoo's instead! :D

Owned em in every semi auto variation, fired em full auto, have a post sample full auto on the way..
Impressions:
Overpriced.
Lousy trigger pull
Finicky on ammo
Inferior for combat (or so I have heard)
So so accuracy
Tough on the hands on full auto
Fragile.
They have a cool factor, but for the money there are better...

What's the consensus on these rifles?
They'd make nice paintball guns.:p

I'd buy a select-fire version in a heartbeat. No thanks on the semi- version. Just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money for a semi-automatic .223 rifle.

I personally don't care too much for the Aug, but at the end of the day the Aug will get the job done (personal military perspective here).
However a few simple modifications would make the Aug much better. Ie a thicker barrel, a higher power scope with proper crosshairs, a better trigger, a proper trigger guard and a solid metal cocking handle.

with that plastic trigger system it should be called the "ugg".

I've often wondered about AUGs until I asked a friend who had owned one a few years before, his response was "Buy an M-4". To me this was enought to make up my mind. But admittedly they do have the cool factor.
Also, has the action ever given anyone problems?

Yeah, if you're a Lefty!
Ouch. :cuss:
Kits are available to change the ejection to the other side; for lots more money, of course.

I'm actually ambivilent toward them.
Decent rifles, but I don't think they are really worth all the hype.

A local pawn shop has had a new green one for over ten years now, several years ago it was going for $2500 and no-one purchased it so now its going for $3500 and still sits on the shelf. Often thought of a trade/cash deal at $2500 and never bit, at $3500 it might as well be the Hope diamond.

If I ever got one it would have to be black ( ). I'd love to put a few hundred rounds thru one of those.

When I took the Gunsite carbine class there were two guys shooting those; everybody else had an AR15. Both guys had problems, one guy had frequent problems. I wasn't standing near them on the line and didn't think it would be nice to ask them exactly what was going on, but all the ARs were far more reliable. I did fire one of them during the night shoot. The optic was very nice for night use, especially when compared to the iron sights on an AR which you couldn't see at all in the dark. This didn't matter to me because I had no problem at night with my Aimpoint ML2. The guy that had the most problems with his AUG actually ended up as having shot the high score for the final school drill if I am not mistaken. It got me thinking that having an optic with a small amount of magnification might be a real postive thing for a defensive carbine.

The one in full auto that I shot didn't seem too bad. Haven't shot one in semi. I can take it or not. My biggest complaint was the way it ejects brass. It is almost as dangerous from the side as from the front.

The AUG is probably the best bullpup assault rifle in .223...
...but it's just as certainly not the best .223 assault rifle of all.
Meaning, if I could have got a Steyr USR at the price of my HK SL8, I'd still have bought the SL8.

Which is kinda like being the smartest kid on the "short bus", when you think about it... :D
I still get strange cravings for one, every now and again, although actually handling/shooting one usually makes them go away for a while. :uhoh:

"The AUG is probably the best bullpup assault rifle in .223..."
And this is based on what ?

I see half of you complaining about the trigger.
Well, say no more, cause I have the solution!
I have had a gunsmith make a new trigger spring to my design.
The new pull is close to 5lbs.
Sure, not a match trigger, but it makes the trigger pull many many times better.
The new spring has been reliable in all the rifles that has the conversion.

Which is exactly what I wanted to say, albeit less direct. ;)
And this is based on what ?
The fact that all other bullpups are even larger lemons?

I just wondered if you had more information. I don't really know much about the track record of bullpups. I of course have read about the problems of the British army.

Tamara, I will not take offense to that (hilarious) remark in reference to my Bushy M17 Bullpup, since it's not an assault rifle (it ain't select fire - and whose trigger, BTW is quite nice with a little work). ;)
