Hi y'all. Need some advice. I bought this Detective Special on gbroker today for a good price...but I noticed it at the last minute and didn't have time to consult anybody before the auction ended.

The problem, as you can see in the description, is that somebody (prob. a gunsmith, I hope) drilled several holes in the backstrap for a gun shroud, which was then removed later...they did at least bother to plug the drill-holes. I'm worried that the holes compromised the frame in some way...but I'm no gunsmith.

Since the Detective is an all-steel gun (and hammer shrouds are installed on revolvers often) do you think this revolver is safe to shoot? Would you shoot it, or do you think it has it been compromised in some way by this work. Opinions please.

i would think so, it probably worked fine with the screws that held the shroud on, so i dont think there will be a problem with them removed.

I think you read it wrong...
this gun started out with a shroud, shroud has been removed and standard hammer added. So there is a drill hole behind backstrap on top and two plugged holes on the left side of frame forward of hammer, and one on the right side.
From the description on the auction no one drilled holes in anything. It says the revolver was originally shrouded and someone removed the shroud. When it was removed the holes were plugged. Now, I don't know if the Det. Special ever came with a shroud because I don't know much about colt revolvers so I don't know if that's true, but that's what it says.

All that aside, I'm sure the revolver is fine to shoot.

I don't think I would worry about it . Just inspect it like any other gun prior to shooting - the holes drilled to anchor the shroud normaly should not creat a problem.
