Six-Shot, 44 Mag, Scandium alloy .... J-Frame?
Just buy a twelve pound sledge hammer and drop it on your hand six times ... it will be cheaper (the sledge hammer).
Somewhere, someone is staring at the social end of their loaded 340PD trying to figure out how S&W squeezed a sixth round of 44 Magnum into the cylinder.

The .44 Magnum is an N frame. Even S&W can't defy the laws of physics that much!

One in .44 Spl would be cool....if it didn't have the @#&K.

If you go to the link above and click all 5 Night Guard revolvers S&W is telling you all 5 are on a " Small Frame (J)- " Now that may be a mistake but that's what all 5 revolvers are marked as by S&W.

That's GOT to be a screw-up. 325s, 327s & 329s are all on the N-frame. The 396 would be an L-frame and so on.
Give 'em a little time. They'll straighten it out eventually. I'd be interested in the 396. Specs would help.

Bane covered these. The 325, 327 and 329 are N frame. There's a 386 and 396 (.44 Special) on L frame. And they brought back the Model 15 as the 315 on the K frame.

And I thought the existing 329 was a bad idea. OUCH!

As soon as they get rid of that frickin lock, I will buy one. But even then, light loads and heavy crimps will have to be the rule. I do like the grips and sights.

I looked at the 396 and was about to love it when the hammer spur snagged and I almost gouged myself.

I'd love the 45acp in a mid-sized snubby. Give me 5 shots and make is small with a bobbed hammer.
These do look smaller than an N frame, but dang $1k, no thanks.

They caught their mistake. They moved them off the J-Frame page.

They caught one mistake but made another. Model 60 is now showing in both J- and K/L- frame sections... Did S&W let their webmaster go?

Do they come in their own Duffle Bags to carry them in or do you just drag them in a cart behind you?

What's the barrel length on the NG N-frames ? 325/327/329
ALso, that NG 396 has to be a 5 shooter.
Harpo
February 14, 2008, 02:33 PM
2 1/2" barrels on all, and you're right - the 396 is a 5 shot.

Personally I think the 325 NG & 396 NG make for
good CCW in a revolver platform. I'd want longer barrels
for any magnum i.e. slower burning powder to get the
advantages With the full moon clips the 325 NG has
and advantage in reloading none of the others can compete
with speedloaders/speed strips.
I'd carry .45 AUto Rim 225 gr. Barnes XPB HP @ 90 FPS
& .45 ACP 230 gr. SPeer Gold DOt JHPs in full moon clips for
reloads. at 28 oz it should be manageable

Interesting to note that the 610 didn't make the cut for a Night Guard cross-over.

Scandium, the metal,is very expensive $1000 a pound IIRC that's why the $1000+ price tag. Don't know if we use scandium where I work but some of the exotic alloys we use for making commercial/military jet engine part are out sight. My company makes a tidy sum from recycling all those turning and scrapped parts.

W/O "the lock" and with a competitive price ... I'd be all over that 396.

Yep. But it sure would be cool. I might even force myself to overlook that @#&K L***
I shot someone elses LW S&W .44 Spl at the range. The recoil was not as bad as expected and it shot great. Light as a feather. I can't remember the Model #.

It looks a little like the Model 29 44 mag bounty hunter with a 3 inch, which I own and it gives your wrist a touch of a spanking, not sure if .5 less barrel might be a little tougher to handel.

The 415 Night Guard was shown at the S.H.O.T. show - I was told
this on the S&W Forum.
So, there's 3 N-frames
329, 327 & 325
2 L-Frames
396 & 386
in the Night Guard line that
more or less correspond nmbering
wise with their all Stainless Steel
with Adjustable sights 6nn models.
& the one K-frame they named like
the above as a 315 but it has no
615 corresponding.
& I agree a 310 NG N-frame .40 S&W
or 10MM would be a nice option.
Wll, with .40 S&W leave the heavy 10mM
for a 610

The 325 Night Guard specifications indicate an XS Big Dot front sight and a C&S Extreme Duty rear sight- is the C&S sight modified to an XS style V-notch? Or is the sight picture a Big Dot in a square notch?
I once (briefly) had a M66 set up with a Big Dot and the stock rear (square notch)- didn’t work for me at all, and I switched the rear sight to an XS V-notch pretty quickly.

The Cylinder & SLide Extreme Duty fixed rear sight.
http://www.cylinder-slide.com/sites.shtml
so part of the Night Guard msrp include the above
$175 or so to the cost.
My number one choice would be the 325 as I already have
the full moon clips for reloads - 2nd choice would be the
315 NG because of size for CCW 6 x .38 SPcl. +P

in 1999 s&w came out with a 5 shot 44special with titanium cylinder and aluminum frame it was a concealed hammer and weighs 18 or 19 ounces it is the model 296 it didnt sell well and only lasted 2 or three years i have one and it does kick pretty bad

S&W isn't repeating their past mistake with the TI cylinder of the 296 the NG line has Stainless Steel cylinders, the 396 NG. is 24.2 oz. & if kept to sane SD loads it will be just fine.
THe 325 NG is 28 oz and imo the best of the bunch with the short case and full moon clips no problem getting the empties out and the full moons into the
cyllinder.
The Cylinder and SLide rear sight link I sent out there explains what it is
and how it is fitted.
THe overall black matte finish/coating is fitting for the use of
the NG line. DOn't want any two tone but the 296 hammer style or
even a centennial style may have been a better chjoice than having
owners bob the hammer.

BlindJustice- Thanks for the link, but have you actually seen the Night Guard guns? I imagine you are correct that the C&S sight is unmodified, but I’m curious to know for sure. Thanks.

OOOhhhh! I LIKE the M396 Night Guard idea! Sort of a modern, retro Fitz Special (except by S&W, not Colt). I, of course, haven't shot one yet...but I'm willing to bet the .44 Special recoil will be easier to handle from a 24.2 oz. L frame than the wrist-wreck you get from a Scandium J frame running full-house .357 mag loads. The .44 Special doesn't have to move very fast to hit plenty hard! Bob that hammer & add C/T laser grips...now there's a proper CCW revolver.

Purchased thye 327 NG. Just a big fan of the .357 Mag and the 8 rounds was just the ticket.
Won't replace my Python for field work, but it carries very nice. I don't carry IWB so size isn't an issue, just weight.

Is there a point to the 357 and 44 mag in such a short barrel? I thought those bigger rounds needed more barrel length to get the most power.
