I have two 8 rd Shooting Star mags that have a problem feeding the first few rounds (230 Federal HP's), but with four or so rounds loaded they feed fine.

I either rack the slide or release the slide stop in a full mag and the round wants to "nose dive" instead of go in the chamber. When I lock the slide back, the nose of the round moves ever so slightly to the correct position. I can then release the slide with no issue. It would be tolerable if it was only the first round, but it hangs up the first few every time.

Is it the weird follower in this type of mag? Seems the spring action will not hold the rounds at the correct geometry to properly feed on a full mag.

Any suggestions?

Does your pistol feed fine with other mags? I have had no problems with my shooting star 8 rd mags in my stock combat commander.

It's a 1911 Sistema (modelo 1927). Works great with the old Argentine mag loaded with HP's, and a Norinco mag with round nose only.

The two shooting stars will feed round nose, but I like to carry the extra HP round.

Likely the mag springs are weak. If you want to keep the mags, Wolff Gunsprings sells replacement mag springs for about $7 each. New mags can be bought at Top Gun Supply for about $12.50.

Another alternative is to try to bend the front of the follower upward to position the front of the rounds higher. This is a bit difficult with Shooting Stars. I have had mixed success with this.

The reason the later rounds feed better is because they are angled higher than the first two or three.
Compare the angle position of the top round in a fully loaded mag versus the round in the mag containing only one round.

Mags are brand new, and the last (8th) round is nice and tight to get in.

Then we have a problem other than weak springs.
Some guns don't like the "wadcutter" feed lips on the Shooting Stars, straight then and abrupt flair. I have some that won't feed at all with them. Some guns will only work with hardball.

The feed lips on the old Arg mag and the Norinco are probably the USGI design as originally made by J M Browning, tapered feed lips. These position the round higher when feeding and thus ease feeding.

Checkmate Industries sells 8 round mags (and 7 round) with a "hybrid" or COLT feed lips. These are tapered like USGI then a slight flair. These also position the round higher and the slight flair serves a a timing mechanism to help position the round. Note: Colt 8 rounders are a twin to the Shooting Stars, so, that is not an alternative.

The only other suggestion I have is to find hollow point ammo that is closer in shape to ball.
