Where I shoot, we often place our targets low to the ground since the backstop is fairly low. Doesnt cause any problems with the rifles but I have trouble staying accurate with my 9mm (Sig P226). Most of my shots are taken standing or kneeling but the target is always lower than my gun. Any tips on how to improve accuracy in this situation?

Compensate by aiming a tad lower. If an object relative to you is at a different angle (up or down doesn't matter), the bullet will hit lower than your target. How much lower depends on the bullet trajectory. I would suggest you play around with elevation somewhat so you can understand its effects. Make sure you do it safely though (obviously, don't shoot up so high you can't see a backstop for the bullet).

Low backstop, hitting the ground. Where are the bullets ending up? If your hitting the dirt at an angle they are going somewhere above the backstop. Just doesn't sound good.
