well, this goes back a few years, some gunsmith, that happen to know Bill Ruger took one of rugers 38s,and reamed out the cylnder,to except 357,it worked as long as you kept the bullets to 110 grn,as the heavier bullets were longer and would ride to far out and hang up,so Ruger was impressed, that he took what he had in hand, and made them the 110,model,untill his stock was used up,he retooled and made them bigger, to except all bullet weights, and i think it might be the model 100 something now,now the 110 was a 5 shot, i know i seen only one or two,for sale ever, its a rare piece for sure,I tossed out all my old mags,or i would look it up my self,Maybe some one remembers

I think you may be referring to the SP101 revolver. It was originally chambered for .38 Special only, though it was possible to load a 125gr .357 most of the time...Only about 3000 of these short framed revolvers were built before the factory extended the frame and all related components 1/16" in order to make a true .357.

The above is acording to Ruger employee Jay Jarvis, from the book "Ruger and His Guns".

Hope this helps.

I've never seen one myself. The barrel would be marked, "125 GR. BULLETS ONLY".

I'm happy enough with my .357 DAO SP101.

I actually have seen one time the factory marked SP101 marked on barrel 125gr bullet only. Anyone else here seen one or own one?

Some gunsmiths figuring they were strong enough, reamed the SP101 .38s out for .357 use and the very early factory SP101 .357 was for 125 gr bullets only.
