Grips for my S&W 29

Hello all.

I am not pleased to admit that I have recently developed a bad habit. I got some .44 Magnum ammo that has more kick to it than I'm used to, and more than I was ready for. I seem to be subconciously rotating my hand around the grip by choking up on the front of the grip, thus when I fire, the back strap is tearing the heck out of my thumb webbing, and the trigger guard is slamming the webbing between my first and second fingers. (I haven't really figured out the exact mechanics of that yet.)

I feel like the problem was bound to happen, as the large grips on the square-butt N-frame don't match up very well with my shorter than average fingers. I am looking at a couple of options on aftermarket grips, but would love some imput. First of all, I'm not crazy about rubber grips, and I don't think they would look right on my engraved, blued, .44, so I think I would like to stick with wood. I really don't mind doing some minor shaving/shaping to a grip to fine tune the feel, and I like the look of a smooth grip a whole lot more than checkered. I think I like finger grooves, as I have enjoyed the limited amount of shooting that I have done with them, plus if I start to dislike them, I imagine I can always carve them off.

I love the Ahrends grips that came with my wife's 627, and am curious how the same grip would translate to the square butt frame. Although expensive, I am fascinated by the Herrett's custom hand-made stocks. That would almost certainly solve the problem on a single try. Also, I've been looking at the Eagle Secret Service grips. I'm planning on getting my CCW permit, and I know that these would help with concealment. My biggest concern on them is that they might be too short at the butt end for that much power. I'm certainly open to suggestions. Thanks!

I've put Herret's "Jordan Troopers" on a 4" 629.
Works great for single action shooting (in terms of recoil management). Really a "stretch" for double action work (the backstrap is covered),

Play around with some of these. BTW, Ahrends is great. So is Herretts. Check out Smiths aftermarket stocks, too.

I strongly recommend you try some nice Pachmeyer type rubber grips - they make a world of difference when shooting stout loads. I like wood too, but these are great!

Dave,

I hear you on the recoil, but I think that they would actually make my problem worse by covering the back strap. The sheer "bang" does not really bother me when I can keep my hand in the right place.

Evyl Robot how about a set of Hogue wood finger groove grips, they partially fill the gap behind the trigger guard and should position you hand better, they also look good.

I agree with Dave. Get a pair of Pachmayrs. I recommend the open backstrap Gripper grips. I have them on my N-frame .44s and .357s and they are great.
Best thing ever for the N-frame shooter.

They don't look pretty, but they are comfortable. Also much cheaper than wood.
