the magazine that came with our SKS appeared to have been chewed on by something. we relized this when we had numorouse jams due to nosediving cartiridges.
our plan is to get some tapco mags and such in the very near future (moneys a bit short at the moment so it has to wait a bit) however my dad did find a fixed mag that i tried to put in the rifle today. unfortunatly i ran into a bit of trouble.
i striped the gun down, got the trigger assembly out, put the mag in and then put the trigger assembly back in. however i then relized the magazine was lose and then with barly a touch fell out so that it was hanging only by the trigger assembly!!
i tried to put it back a few times, but it never stays (and my hand hurts from putting that trigger assembly back in so many times)
so what am i doing wrong? or with the rifle not take the fixed magazine?

you should make sure you take the bolt out to propperly put the magazine in and out. You can replace the removable Tapco magazines with the bolt simply pulled back with your hand. Don't mess with any of those crappy metal 20 or 30 round magazines, they suck.

errrr..... i striped the rifle down. so yeah that would mean i took the bolt out.
and yes i know how to change a detached magazine out. i am not a moron.
my question is why the fixed magazine is not staying where it belongs?

Need a little more info...

Who's your SKS maker? (Russian, Norinco, Yugo, Albanian, etc.)
Is your replacement from another SKS? Same nationality? Is it an aftermarket replacement? Is it plastic (yes they do exist)?
Was the "chewing damage" confined to the magazine area or did it also go in the reciever well too?

Headbutted it yet? :neener: (sorry, a little needed humor)

magazine has to go in before the trigger group.

i know the magizine goes into the rifle before the trigger group. thats why i took the trigger group out. which, cmdr, is what i already stated quite clearly.

the rifle is a norinco and i don't know who made the magazine. dad got it at gun store when he was looking for the tapco mags. it is a metel ten round fixed SKS mag. i don't know more then that.
i noticed in several disscussions that people said that they had to modify the stock interier to take the detachable mags. could that be affecting the replacement of the originial style magazine?

Why don't you state what kind of magazine it is. Is it an aftermarket floating follower magazine? or an orriginal type 10 round with fixed axis follower? 20 round with which follower? is it broken? what exactly do you mean by "it's not staying where it belongs" what is it not doing? is the magazine body moving and causing feeding issues durring the striping of a fresh round or is it an issue with whatever follower mechanism you have (because you have not specified)?

If you know so much about your situation don't openly ask other people for help then criticize them for giving you pointers.

sorry, I misread. If it's hanging by the trigger group, Only other thing I can think of is that the duckbill isn't seated correctly. Maybe pics would help.

There's a protrusion from the frame that the fixed magazines fit around to lock into the spot for them. Sounds like either your fixed magazine is busted and is not fitting around that protrusion properly, or the protrusion itself is damaged or altered in some way so as to prevent a proper fit. This is assuming that the magazine falls out from the front (muzzle) end first.

actually i got it in. it just took more force then i was expecting to get it properly seated. i wasn't getting to latch on the duckbill in. one of my failings is that i treat these things far to delicatly. which is a blessing at times, but often a bit of a curse as well. but thanks for ya'lls help.
