I am starting to get geared up for deer season here in KY. I always like to start practicing with my Deer rifle (or pistol) several months in advance so I and totally comfortable that I can put the bullett where it needs to go during the season.

I have recently aquired a couple of rifles in .308 and I am looking for a good factory loading (no time to reload...'m lucky to find time to shoot).

Any suggestions???

Whitetail are relatively small as deer go, so you don't need to worry too much about premium loads that will penetrate deeply or drag a bull moose 100 yards through energy dump. I'd recommend shooting some of the standard loads such as Remington's Core-Lokt or Winchester's various offerings. Find a low-cost load that your guns like, and you're home (almost) free! I think the 150gr. loads should be plenty for whitetail, but some rifles like the heavier bullets (165gr. or 180gr.) for accuracy. YMMV.

i've had good results with the federal 150gr ballistic tip load. also with the pmc loaded with the 150gr barnes X bullet, but those are hard to find in these parts. saddlebum

I love the 150gr Corelokt Remington in .308 as well. Never done me wrong......

My Remington 788 does best with the Federal Premium 165gr boattails.... from bench rest I can cloverleaf at 100 yards and never had a deer go more than 20 feet

Over the years, I've come to distrust Winchester Power Points. I'm sure someone here has had good results, but for my $, they are just too soft.

I'm with Al on that one. Made a head shot on a walking buck a couple of years back-just about blew the whole far side of his face off! I don't know if it would have penetrated both sides if I had aimed behind the shoulder. Some folks like the bullet to stay inside on a chest shot, but I prefer two holes-better chance of a good blood trail
