I won't pay $1000 for a .308 AR, what other options are there?

Man, talk about sticker shock. Yikes.
Since I won't spend that much money on an AR heres my needs/wants.
It has got to be as tough as a military issue M16 but in .308 Win and semi automatic
Just regular iron sights along the lines of the old M16A1/A2 or there abouts.
Cost no more than $750.
Be able to get 20 round, or larger cap., mags.
Good replacement parts avalibility.
Thats about it.

No disrespect to the SKS or the AK fans but I am not wanting either of those types. I have shot them and they are fun and neat (if you get a chance to shoot the military AK's, go for it, they are good weapons) but not what I am looking for.

It's either gonna be a .308 saiga or spend $1000+

I'm reminded of the old saying

.308 AR under $1000? Honestly don't know of any.....

There's no quality 308 battle rifle that's going to be even under $900.

AR10.........around $1000

ptr91........around $1000

dsa fal.........around $1000

converted saiga 308..........<$1000

M1a.........usually higher than $1000

Put into costs potential upgrades, magazine costs, ammo cost, there's no way you WON'T spend more than $1000.

ar 10 used, for about 700 or 800, Saiga for about 350, Interordinance may be doing there prorietary thing for about 500 bucks, don't know if they finished it yet...

Good luck...When you find one, order me 3.

Unless you are talking about a Saiga .308, that isn't technichally an "AK," which can be had for ~$350.

It's not possible to find a quality .223 AR (new) for less than that, and you want to scale the platform up to .308 and come in cheaper than .223? Sorry, I think the price expectations are unrealistic here.

The Saiga 308 is going to be the best quality .308 semi auto rifle in the price range you're looking for.

Most of the other semi auto .308 rifles in that price range are crap (CETME, Various HK Clones made by Hesse/Vulcan, Century FALs, etc)

You might find a used AR10 for $750ish. Might.

Occasionally you find well done 7.62NATO conversions done on French MAS 49/56 (which are at least unique).

You can pick up an Eagle Arms AR10 lower for around $170 and then build a rifle for probably about $700-$800 (but again, thats going to be a lot of shopping around and a good measure of luck).

You can also probably buy a FAL parts kit and receiver and build one in your price range.

But honestly, most of these plans fall short of just dropping a grand and buying a darn AR-10 :p

I just went through the same thing recently and decided that I couldn't afford a semi auto .308 worth buying (I figure you're looking at at least $1200).

rr:"Interordinance may be doing there prorietary thing for about 500 bucks, don't know if they finished it yet..."There is no mention of anything like that on their website at the present time.

You can get an FAL, CETME or G3 clone for that price, just not one from a reputable maker. They all have decent sights, take cheap mags and a good many of them are perfectly reliable. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Or you could get a Saiga 308. Cheaper and more reliable than any of them, but it is an AK.

I think Rat may have found the only AR-10 rifle that your looking for in your price range. It's either that or you can buy the Saiga in 308 and convert it.
Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Norinco M-14 Clone for $800.00, then bit and piece USGI parts for it....Or buy a Saiga...Or just deal with spending a grand and buy something decent, (but I personally would not buy an AR-10).....Bite the bullet and get yourself an FAL PTR-91 or my favorite: M1A.....Welcome to the real world... ;)

Build an AR with 7.62 kit or 6.8. Or pay the $1000+. Check model 1 sales they have kits in both calibers.

The PTR-91 used to sell around that price new a few years ago. I guess it would depend on what the seller paid for it and what upgrades he did. I have no idea what market is right now though.

I agree with the others. Your price expectations are unrealistic. A Saiga is about all you will find unless you want a hunting rifle.

Here is a LR-308 by DPMS @ $949 shipped. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=92488853
Good luck in your search for the perfect 308 gun deal.

Don't forget that ammo is gonna be around fifty cents a pop, cheapest. Unless you're just planning to hoard, you'll be spending a lot more on ammo over a year or two than the gun will cost. .308 isn't exactly a budget caliber.

Best price you'll find on a new DPMS LR-308 will be at RGuns.net. The 24" heavy barrel stainless (non-fluted) with A1 Upper Receiver goes for $875.00. If you want a fluted barrel, it will be $925.00.

I ordered my 24" fluted SS A1 on a Monday, and it was at my FFL on Wednesday.
