66 = First Stainless steel model 19.
66-1 = Gas ring moved from yoke to front of cylinder to prevent expansion binding them up when hot.

S&W 66-1 (1977) change of gas ring from yoke to cylinder.
(1978) introduction of 6" barrel as a standard catalog length
(1982) change to model 66-2
