I was looking through youtube the other day, and showed a public suicide of a years ago PA Treasurer of the time Bud Dwyer. Just curious what revolver that was. Had heard somewhere he used a FMJ round. The Jack Ruby thread got me thinking of this and also other famous or infamous assassinations and what guns where used in such

Back when I was doing metal fabrication there was this guy who always had a handfull of 3/4" washers in his pocket. He liked to hand them out as "Budd Dwyer Commemorative Coins".

Mr. Dwyer shot himself 1-22-87. The beauty of his solution is because he was deceased before sentence was handed down, he was still in office, he was therefore never convicted of taking kickbacks technically, and his wife and family were eligible to keep his pension and benefits.

I think it was a .357 S&W iirc.

I get what your saying, but perhaps "beauty of his solution" isn't the best turn of phrase there. Not to sound prudish, but I am certain his wife and family would have preferred he not killed himself.

It was a large .357, and I'm almost positive it was a Smith. I had a paper route in subarban Harrisburg at the time and delivered that evening's edition. The article mentioned him taking a revolver from an envelope, speculation that it was to be presented to someone, then the realization that he was going to shoot himself.

I was a kid when this happened, so I don't really remember it. Then again, I remember the Challenger, so maybe this was something that my folks made sure I didn't see. I had to Google Budd Dwyer to even find out who he was. Stumbled upon a video of the actual footage (it was a S&W .357); I have to say, I was surprised that the whole event was on film and circulating around on the internet so freely. I'd have thought that the news crews would've cut off the cameras once they realized what was about to happen. So did that footage air in its entirety (gore and all) on live television, or was it taped and edited before broadcast?

Yes it did, and the news channels kept running it over and over again all night. I was working in the building next to the Finance building in which the Treasurer was located. I saw the ambulances pull up and called a close friend who was Deputy Treasurer under Dwyer. When she answered the phone she was crying and said "yes its true, the Tresurer shot himself". I had no ideas what had happened, I just called because I saw ambulances pull up. My first wife also worked there and was a friend of Bud's too. I met him on several occassions. It was a .357 Smith with at least a six inch barrel. Very sad.

I was looking at some websites on various assassinations and found
sirhan sirhan used a 22 caliber revolver but seems to be alot of conflict if that was the only gun used.

Jack Ruby used a Cobra 38 Special on Oswald.
Booth used a .44 caliber Derringer on Lincoln.
Guiteau used a .44 Webley British Bulldog revolver on Garfield.
Czolgosz used a .32 caliber Iver-Johnson pistol on McKinley.
Fromme pointed a .45 caliber handgun at Ford.
