Afternoon all,
I'd like to qualify myself as a student in good academic standing, an active volunteer, and an active duty servicemember. Today, I received an email from the President of my University. It reads as follows:

Dear Members of the Campus Community, I know that each of you shares my sadness on the occasion of the tragic event at Northern Illinois University. I have written on your behalf to the President and the campus community there to offer our most sincere condolences. I am certain that we are also sympathetic to the plight of the campus community at Union in Tennessee following the devastation of their campus, loss of life and personal injuries. I have written as well to the President and his campus community. No letter, no words can ever express fully our sadness on these occasions. As members of a university community we feel even more than other citizens the loss of the faculty, student body and alumni of our sister institutions. In campuses dedicated to the advancement of wisdom, knowledge and understanding, acts of violence have no place. Loss of life and injury to young people who should enjoy the promise of many years and the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the world are abhorrent in the extreme. I encourage us all to dedicate our grief to positive and creative responses to violence. How can we contribute to the creation of a world where we will never again witness such sadness? Let us each commemorate these lives so tragically lost by considering the causes of violence and the elements required to constitute a world which better reflects our ideals and the dignity, generosity and noble spirit of humankind.
Sincerely yours,
Roseann Runte
President

She asks for creative responses to end violence. I feel that this is a call to our articulate members concerned with the well being of others and ourselves to write to a polite response to an open-minded woman about responsible gun ownership and the necessity of concealed carry. The point of contacts are cdavis@odu.edu and OfficeOfThePresident@odu.edu. Please copy the messages to both, and please be polite.

Thank you all for your concern,
Pat

OK I stepped up to the challenge:

President Runte,

The only effective way to stop violence is with violence. It is this simple truth that led America into World War II. We used extreme violence for good. The aspirations of a madman and a militaristic nation were drowned in the blood of liberty.

Our police officers use violence against criminals every day.

Our soldiers use violence against terrorists who would destroy our way of life.

Merchants use violence against thieves who would kill for a few dollars.

Even church members use violence to stop rampaging killers. Note that no churches have been attacked since Jeanne Assam stopped the church shooter in Colorado Springs.

Now is the time for you to step up to the challenge, and allow students and employees with Concealed Handgun Permits to protect themselves, and others, while on campus.

As a non-student/employee, I can legally wear my handgun on your campus. Your students and employees can wear handguns off campus, and on to other campuses. The whole idea of a gun free campus is nonsensical.

It is time to stop restricting the God given human rights that your students are born with. Self defense is natural. Homicidal maniacs cannot be preempted, but they can be stopped, if given the chance.
