white steel revolvers

In a lot of pics I see cap and ball revolvers having a white finish rather than blue.

Do you all buy them this way or are you doing something to remove the blueing? I dunno, maybe they are just worn.

I like the look of the white steel. I have looked around and every place I find selling C&B revolvers they are blued or stainless.

Im283 I perfer my colts in the white very easy to do and care for.
soak the parts in household vinegar. And then use M.A.A.S. metal polish on them I do all mine by hand. The M.A.A.S. also protects the metal.

M.A.A.S. is a metal polish I buy it from Walgreens for I think it is $5 a tube.
Great stuff.

I purchased my 1860 Colt Army that way through Dixie Gun Works. Actually was cheaper to buy it unblued but not why I bought it. Just like it that way because the 1863 Colt special model contract musket I own came that way originally.

Goes better with the white (fake ivory) pistol grips too.

how long of a soak does it take?

Does the Maas just protect or is it part of the bluing removal?

Shouldnt take more than 10 minutes in the vinegar.
The M.A.A.S. is a polish and a protectant it has nothing to do with the blueing removal. After about 10 Minutes in the vinegar you are going to want to lightly rub the parts with a brass wire brush to be sure all the blueing is gone. then rinse in very hot water. When you start to polish by hand make sure you run a swab with M.A.A.S. down the barrel so as not to allow rust to start. Let me know if you need any other advice.

I just hope Macmac does not mind. He has sweat equity in this gun.
Without him this thing would be a paperweight.

Here is a pic of finished, well refinished 1851 Navy, and the gun in original condition. Kind of an after and before thing

Was it worth the time and effort?

Did vinigar turn the brass frame white too? It sure looks white in the pic. And why would I mind? It is your dream, not mine.

Maybe if I had flame colored the steel parts, it might cause me to wonder, but all I did was make it speak once more as best I could, and clean up the screws. You have fun making it be yours your way. :neener:

On edit: I think you had flouresent lighting, and I can see the brass is still brass.

I did nothing to the brass other than polish it with Brasso.

I am going to get the Maas tomorrow, had business tonight and could not do it.
There is a Walgreens I can go to in the morning, and if they do not have it maybe ACE does.

I baked the gun at 250 degrees and then soaked it good with plain old motor oil.
When I get the Maas I will clean it again and apply that stuff.

I think it looks awesome, and will look better when it has some powder residue on it. Maybe I will have time to shoot a few rounds tomorrow before work.

I went to Longshot Logan's link. Longshot was a cowboy action shooter and one heck of a funny guy. His threads on the SASS wire were classic. Unfortunately, Longshot passed away last year. Thanks for posting this link, brought back some memories.

Damn wish I could help you out more I found it by chance while I was looking for brasso and it does such a good job on the steel. If you have a SUper Walmart near you can try there. Im surprised that the Walgreens didnt have it thats where I get mine from.

there is a super walmart I can try and another Walgreens I can try. I will give them a go next time I get out.

I shot the gun today and there seems to be no ill effects from removing the bluing.

I like the revolver in white a lot better. Been bouncing some ideas around in my head to color in the battle scene on the cylinder, thought it might look unique if I could do it right.

Head down to your local auto parts store pic up the paste version of mothers mag & aluminum polish. Works great

Scrat, that navy looks mighty nice polished up like that. The vinegar does a job on that bluing. I think I soaked mine for near an hour and all the blue was gone.

I been bouncing around the idea in my head to do it to the Griswold replica I have coming. Plenty of time to think about it or do it.

I think the white steel looks really good against the brass frame.

And yes... I cleaned the chambers after I took that pic.
AMAZING how fast it will rust bare before its lubed and protected.

go get some mothers mag & aluminum polish at your local auto parts store. you will have to put some big time elbow grease into it. However i can see my reflection in mine. It has a mirror finish right now.

You guys are setting trends on the forum, I went and picked up some M.A.A.S. and vinegar, plus some extra corn meal and crisco since I was at walley world grocery shopping. :)

I was wondering would you have to reapply the M.A.A.S. every now and then on the metal?

Thinking about doing this to a 1851, though just adding it to the cylinder and barrel, not the frame.. Maybe I should plug the barrel and cylinder to keep it from rusting in those spots...?
