The West Virginia legislature is finally addressing whether concealed handgun licensees' information should remain public or be made private, via House Bill 4026. This bill prohibits disclosure of names, addresses and other personally-identifying information of persons licensed to carry concealed handguns.

A poll was started today on The Intermountain (http://theintermountain.com/)site, a daily newspaper circulated throughout north-central WV.

It could use some help!

"Do you think the identity of people with a permit to carry a concealed weapon should remain on public record?"
yes 64%
no 36%

I am not a voter. However, curious about the poll and your concerns. I want to know what is the logic behind polling either way on this one? And you views to that respect. Thank you.

Well, I believe publishing lists of CC licensees is mainly a privacy matter, but it could get worse. Here are my views in an answer to the poll:

Do you think the identity of people with a permit to carry a concealed weapon should remain on public record?

Absolutely not!

First, you violate the privacy of law-abiding individuals and give criminals targets for victims.

You create a windfall for criminals. Convicted felons, barred from legally buying guns, can use a public list of gun owners to select homes to burglarize in their search for firepower.

A very large concern is for the safety of domestic abuse victims who might carry concealed weapons for their own protection but donít want an abusive former partner to know where they live. With those addresses being public, the stalkers and the rapists are more empowered.

Look at it another way - what if a list of homes that do not own firearms were made available to the public? Would you feel your rights were violated? Particularly, right after a home invasion from a criminal that knew he wouldn't face armed resistance?

Your privacy is on trial here. Whether or not a person legally owns a gun or is a licensed concealed carrier should not be public record or your business.
