Welcome aboard!

I personally prefer a shrouded hammer (or hammerless) snubby revolver like the 638 or the 640. This way I can shoot my snubby while it is still inside my jacket pocket if I ever needed too. You can shoot a bottom feeder from inside your jacket pocket, but probably only once!

I also own a PPK, which is a heck of pistol and it is small, which make it VERY easy to wear concealed...but I always come back to my snubby. The snubby is just easier for me to deploy and easier to shoot. But be warned, the snubby takes a bit of practice to shoot WELL.

yeah the snubby seems a good option also i am going into law enforcement so a snubby is good as an ankle gun any thought s on some of the taurus snubbies?

I just stopped in today to buy a new Glock 27, got delayed, so I'll have to wait a few days to go pay and pick it up, but it's a really small gun, with multiple styles of magazine bottoms, so you can go from concealment minded flush fitting 9 rounders, or pinky extension 9 rounds, or +2 finger extensions, plus there's all those compact and fullsize glock magazines for reloads, probably a bit less comfortable to conceal than a snubby revo, but still very good.

Many police departments have their own ideals about back ups. They will tell you what you can and can not use, on and off duty.

There's lots of good pocket guns out there. I have to agree with Creature - the 38 snub is my all time favorite as well.

Although, I did win a Gunbroker auction today for an FEG R61 (PPK copy with an alloy frame) in 9x18 Makarov caliber. It should be an interesting little pocket gun.

Mastiff4570---I have been trying to find that out for the last month.
I'm looking for something small like the KelTec .380
I have a gun show this Saturday and will let you know what I come up with.

I find a S&W j-frame to be a very good pocket gun. I prefer my 340PD for ease of carry, but a 642 is much cheaper and just as easy to carry.

In tight fitting jeans I find myself carrying my little NAA .22wmr Mini revolver quite often.

i have been looking at the NAA but more for novelty than anything

I have a good friend who always has his NAA with him. He calls it his "get away gun" as it would hopefully give him enough time to get away from an assailant.

I like the older .38spl and .32 cal J frame snubs.

For a semi, I still like the Beretta Jetfire with that oh so nice trigger and Beretta Bobcat [21A] in .22lr, or I have used the 25ACP.

I go way back on these guns and includes having to safely unload one, and put away [Like a Police Lockbox] and then be safe about reloading after I exit the building, and reloading in a vehicle.

I am probably the only one that considers such situations...

I consider them as well, sm.

Mastiff, if you can, take the time to learn how to use the snubby well. Because what you learn, you can take with you to other rigs. You'll be glad you did. As far as Taurus snubbies go, I have always had good luck with them...some will cuss them 'til tomorrow. I think they are a pretty good value. That said, I am personally willing to spend the extra dough on an old S&W or Colt snub given the choice.

btw,...glad you're back, sm.

I just got a Kahr PM9 today and I'm really, really liking it. Haven't shot it yet, but I've gotten some great replies about it. Smaller and much lighter than my all steel PPK/s and fires a more powerful round, too. I have a distinct feeling that it will become my favorite replacement for my Kel-Tec P3AT (don't trust it anyway) and my über reliable PPK/s. I have a G26, but I just can't pocket carry that thing. Too thick... Yeah, I lose some capacity over the G26, but the Kahr is much thinner and shorter overall.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II, a 3" .45 ACP. A lot of folks scoff at this or doubt that it is a viable pocket gun. Yet carrying a snub nosed pistol is considered just fine. I have both and have compared them for size, they are almost identical in size and in some cases the 1911 is narrower than snubbies. So my vote is for a 3" 1911.

Yeah, but I'll bet that Kimber is pretty heavy for a pocket pistol. I don't want to be walking around looking all lopsided and such.

NAA Mini-revolver, specifically the 1 1/8" in 22 long rifle , is a old old useful tool to some persons and the "tasks" they may find themselves in.
This goes back to when these first come by/ under Freedom Arms

This was/is the deep cover, last ditch gun.

We always want[ed] the lanyard option, always.

Now I will not share how these are always concealed, as criminals already know, and aspiring criminals do not need to learn from a public gun forum on Internet.
If you are in a "work" you know, if you need to know, those training you will share.

I will share one, and that is using that lanyard and wearing around the neck (this is sorta obvious, even a idiot could figure this out).
If one is down, take note where hands are and what one is likely able to reach.

One may not be able to access ankle, back pocket, front pocket...as the hands are defending and fighting.

Ladies being raped, and evils hands in places they should not be, and the idea is to stop a threat.
Wheelchair bound folks down and out of chair, and again chairs toppling impedes access , and one needs to stop a threat.

Think out of the box, do not become a "programmed" shooter, or "defensive" person.
Criminals know, heck the wrote the book on what folks will do to counter moves.
They know before you do, you will do a move as that is what is taught by instructors.

Don't be predicable, do the unexpected, and do not allow yourself to be "read" by anyone.

i.e. Back in the day seasoned cops strongly suggested rookies learn to draw and shoot effectively weak handed.

Criminals will "case" a person, and note they use a pen or pencil with a right hand , see them use right hand to use a door key..etc.
Most folks are right handed.

Still a dumb criminal, has all day to study , read people , places and things.
So they watch to see a lady use her left hand to write a check, for instance.
Left is strong side for her, and they will focus on her left hand and side, as that hand and side will go for gun.

They look to see which pocket has a tactical knife clipped to it...

Seasoned cops knew this a long long time ago, and that split second a situation happens, and the criminal is looking at strong side, might make all the difference in being able to draw and fire, quickly and get quick, effective hits weak side.

Throwing the BG off...
New names for the same thing today , principles are the same though.

Same reason some J frames and hardware store 32 and .22 guns were worn around the neck by some when I was kid, born in the mid 50's.

Veterans of Wars with amputations, wheelchair bound, Polio victims...made for easier prey back in the day...

Same type of prey is targeted today...

Nothing is new, just life is cyclic.

I used to carry a 357 snub, but since I've gone to the Keltec P3at I haven't looked back. It can go anywhere and weighs nothing. Once you find the right ammo, they are reliable. Crude little beasts, but reliable.

Crude little beasts, but reliable.

With the most horrific trigger I've ever used on any hand gun...or any firearm for that matter. Simply TERRIBLE. Mine sees no carry duty and barely any range time. I probably haven't even handled it in over a year.

cwp9/pm9, the PPS or a 9mm jframe

Smith M&P340 with CT grips for me, every day. 13oz, .357 capable, and great for the pocket.

If I thought I wanted a Kel-Tec sized auto, I'd at least give a look to the new Ruger: http://www.ruger.com/LCP/

Since you're going into LE I'd defintely check out what the department says about back ups.
Here in PHX my LE buddie carries an issued G22 and back up G27. The logical back up choice would be a compact version of the same maker and caliber. In case your primary fails your back up will load the same mags as your duty pistol FWW.
I have a snubbie S&W .38 and it's perfect for the pocket.

I find the j-frame hammerless snubbies ideal for pockets. I prefer shooting something a little heavier (right now there's a bobbed hammer SP101 in my pocket in an Uncle Mike's) but the alloy ones are more likely to go wherever I go. First rule of a gunfight - bring a gun!

Kahr PM40 is what I carry the most. One more shot than a J-frame and IMHO is even better for ankle carry.

J-frame S&W SC360 .357Mag is my second most common carry.

I've a Kel-Tec P3AT .380ACP for when I don't need to carry a gun :)

My Kimber Ultra Carry always seems just a bit too big except for during our short not sumer season and what passes for cold weather around here.

Check out my small gun thread with comparison photos:

Take your choice or both in your jacket & pants pocket...Took them out to the range today, my hand is a little sore from the punishing PPK in a .380.
The .32 is a delight, shoots true, and never fails...Yeah, I know: an anemic rd. but someone would surely get the message...:)

Actually, I like carrying my Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry .45 ACP when applicable, backed by the Seecamp LWS-32, or KEL-TEC P3AT .380.

I prefer the .45 ACP caliber in a defensive handgun; even though its
ballistics are not that great when fired from the 3" barrels, like the
Kimber SS Ultra Carry~! :scrutiny: ;)

Best for me in Jeans front pocket is S&W Bobbed Mdl. 37, Charter Arms Undercover DAO, or Colt Agent. Back pocket will get a Taurus 605 or Ruger SP101 DAO. In Dress Pants or lightweight pants the 37, Charter, or Colt will go in the back pocket. It is very rare that I ware anything but Carpenter Jeans so a lightweight is in a pocket and a 605, SP101 or 617 Taurus are IWB. 99% of the time I have Two Revolvers, reloads for each, a Flashlight, Knife, Pepper Spray, Cell Phone, and my Wallet on me. It takes Heavy Pants and a good Belt to carry all this stuff.
