I am not a post count junkie looking for easy ways to raise my count but I am curious as to how the count is calculated.

Is it calculated only when you start a thread, or only once per reply to any thread?

I ask because I have noticed that if I reply to a thread twice my post count stays the same.

Just curious.

Every post is added to a member's post count. If you reply 5 times in a single thread, your count will increase by 5.

Are you sure your post count remains the same? The displayed count is dynamic. Your count shown on an earlier post is bumped when you post anywhere. It will match the count shown in a later post.

I could swear that I have posted multiple times in a thread and the next post the count did not go up. No big deal just a curiosity really. The next time I see it I will give you a real example.

For the record your post count here is now 731 (both posts). Let's see what it is if you reply.

Ok it's working, my bad. I wasn't considering that it dynamically updated all previous posts.

Thanks

well the thing is, every time a thread is displayed it rechecks the post count. so it doesnt keep what your post count was when you made the exact post. would be easier ont he server, but would take up more space as it would have to keep every post as an individual html file or such. but its all stored dynamicaly in mysql tables....i believe :D. so if you dont know what your current count is, then you wont notice it getting bigger. but every post, not just new topics, but every reply is added to your post count. not exactly sure how vbulitin stores this info, but ubb has a file and keeps record of your post count in there, and adds one to the number that it has in memory then writes it to the file.......yes i work on boards a little too much

Use of smilies reduce post count by 25%. We are trying to encourage members to be more literal and articulate. Photos and drawings reduce post count by 50%; that is, we take the total # of posts you have, divide by half and that's what you see displayed. Lengthy boring posts are punished by nasty letters and confinement to the quiet room with no virtual beer from the staff. We also contact someone closeby to swing by your computer to wreck your keyboard. ;)

Excuse me, the rest of the staph is dragging me away....

And anyone that manages to post a message with fewer words than the previous C.R. Sam message posted gets a 50% increase in post count.
